mild in law rant...

Yesterday we were visiting the in laws, which usually is alright, but when DH went to change DS's, 21 months, diaper, he started fussing and crying a little. This for some reason prompted both Grandma and Grandpa to mock our son, "Oh, poor baby (very patronizing tone), wah, wah, wah..." WTH??? Luckily my DH snapped with, "Hey, don't do that! Would you want DS to mock you when you're crying while getting your diapers changed when your older?" They both stopped and just walked away. I think they got the point.

That stinks. I don't know why some adults feel that they can speak to children in such a way. My Mom has done this a couple of times in DD's presence... it's really odd, because she never did that to me as a child. Maybe they just get soft in the head and they get used to talking to their PETS instead of wee people.

Glad your DH put a stop to it.

My mom does that too

I hate it. She does it more to my son than daughter which is even worse.

Kudos to your dh for that quick response

your DH rocks.

My husband does that sometimes, mock our boys when they cry (for no reason, in his opinion)

We have had a few fights over this issue.

What a great husband!

Unfortunately, I've heard similar comments from my family toward my daugthter. I tend to ignore it and let it go. I think I will use your husband's response in the future!

Great response from your DH!

The strangest similar comment I ever witnessed was from my SIL's aunt (so no direct relative of ours) came up while I was changing DS#1s diaper (when he was small) and baby-talked, "Did you pee in your pants? You should be ashamed of yourself!"
