More poops with a cold? Or does this look like food intolerance?

For the past month or so (as he's been trying new foods) he's been on-and-off getting these sequences of a day or several where he'll have like 6 mini-poops instead of his usual 1-2, and they're mushy, and they give him nasty diaper rash. We just called in a scrip for an allergy panel, but it looks like he has reactions to dairy, soy, and citrus.

Today he's got the mushy poops going again -- they're tiny, so, say, 3-5 of them is equivalent to one normal one -- and he's got a bit of a rash. The rash is more in his inner thighs than his butt, though, so it could well be he's peeing out something that's irritating him. He may or may not be coming down with a cold, though, and during the cold he had last month he had the poops going too, but that could have been a food reaction as well. VERY CONFUSING.

The day before yesterday he drank a few ounces of juice (he NEVER drinks juice) and the three main ingredients were pear, pineapple, and carrot. He's also eaten a bunch of really ripe pear the past few days (1/2 large pear every day, and it's super ripe). Yesterday he also ate the first meat he's ever had (I cooked him liver to try and increase his iron) but he had the weird poops going on the day before that. Is it likely to be the juice, d'you think, just taking a couple of days on its way out? I seem to remember he's had this reaction to pear before, too, if it was ripe enough and he ate enough of it. Also I've been giving him little bits of Floradix over the past couple of weeks, again for the iron. And he had some tomato sauce yesterday, which usually he won't touch. That's all he's been having that's new.

I'm thinking the pineapple juice and the pear. I dunno. I hate limiting his fruits! But I also hate wiping his butt when it's raw and welty and he's screaming in agony.

Sorry. Long again. Thoughts?

I don't know a whole lot about food intolerances but I do know that my 17-month old daughter gets runnier poops that give her a terrible rash if she has too much citrus. These citrus rashes are very different from anything else- they blister and it pains her terribly. She's only had that kind of rash once really badly cause it was so traumatic for her and me! Now I limit the amount to a couple of slices of orange on any given day. And I've heard this is very common until age 4. Same with tomato / tomato sauce, although my daughter doesn't seem to react to that.

Thalia only poops 1/day or 1 every other day max so we've never had the more frequent, smaller poops. But pears- like prunes - help you go -- we used to feed her pears and pear juice a lot when, for a few months after she started eating solid food, she would strain and strain to poop. So perhaps your DS's eating pear might account for the more frequent poops?

Hopefully someone who knows more about this kind of stuff will chime in!

Yeeeah, I've noticed the citrus connection with him. Gah. Just when he starts digging fruit again I have to limit it! (And I have been limiting it -- days when I give him half a pear, he'd happily eat the whole thing. And don't get me started on clementines. He'd put away half a dozen a day easy if I let him.)

The worst with him is soy. Last month he broke out in this open oozing welty horror of a rash that covered his whole diaper area and didn't even start healing until I busted out the antibiotic ointment and still took a week to go away. That was thanks to grilled soycheese sandwiches (with other stuff snuck in). BUT other times he has soy and nothing happens. I don't get it.

This would be so much easier if he weren't a picky eater. Or if he were, y'know, toilet trained. But that's a whole other post or two right there.

Colds also make things runny and make LOs crave vitamin C. So it's just thing after thing.

aaaand now he's up there asleep and I've heard about fifty farts come through the baby monitor in the past two hours. WTH? Of course, his dad did let him drink a whole packet of Emergen-C tonight, soooo I'm sort of bracing for another acid pee diaper disaster tomorrow. *headdesk*
