What do you knit for yourself?

Thread Starter
Assuming sweaters are out (I have finish-itis - a sweater will languish for years), what do you knit for yourself? I fall in love with these beautiful yarns, and have no idea what to do with them, and really, little boy can only wear so many pairs of longies... grandma's already made snide comments about his "fancy pants" - wait until she sees some of the hand-dyes.

So what can I make myself? I live in a temperate climate, so hats and scarves aren't necessary (and I wear sandals 8 mos of the year), I'd never finish a sweater... so that leaves shawls/shrugs, which I'm liable to never wear except around the house... there's gotta be something I'm missing.

go to your library and get a couple of 'one skien wonders'- loads of little projects.

and I just can't find the pattern I am looking for. It is a knit purl poncho from magknits (before the magknits drama)- maybe some mama knows where to find this- I can't even find it on rav. Basically you knit a tube and the shaping is done by changing needle size. This is a fun knit for fun thick and thin yarns and is a fabulous nursing cover. I love mine....

Socks and Blankets/Throws have no seaming required.

Or, there are sweater patterns that require almost no seaming (just two small seams on the underarms - such as a yoked sweater or a raglan sweater.

Dishcloth, hotpad, sweatervest....

Are you signed up on Ravelry? You can search a huge database of patterns for ideas there - and there's lots of free patterns...

www.ravelry.com

You could also try learning to crochet. There's almost no seaming in crochet.

I've made myself shrugs, a poncho, a skirt, a seamless sweater (working on another), socks, hats, scarf, gloves. I live in a warmer climate, too, so the hats, scarves and gloves aren't as useful but one set is good to have. I like socks. I've made myself 3 pair so far and am planning to make more. Once I had a couple that's all I want to wear and don't have enough. I plan to make some dishcloths for my house since I can't find the colors I want in the stores. I've made coasters and a bowl. Hair scrunchies are small and quick so you could use scraps for those. Definitely check out the Ravelry pattern search and there are tons of other free patterns online if you look on the yarn websites.

What about calorimetry from knitty? I just made one and I LOVE it. I mean, LOVE. It's not a full hat so it's cooler than wearing a thick wool hat and I bet it would be cute in cotton for a summer hairband.

I am making a skirt from the Knit Cafe. It is really cute. I made a practice one for my dd. I sometimes make socks to.

fingerless gloves/handwarmers. i just realized this. this is my THING, apparently, i haven't knit a single pair of the kind with fingers or mittens for myself. I must just subconciously be protecting my typing fingers, lol!

I have several pairs of mittens and some scarves, lots of scarves, and even though I usually give away my sweaters, I do have one right now. I also have a blanket that I knit. My kids have lots of slippers, socks, hats and mittens.

blanket, rugs, potholders, dish clothes, dish towels, hand towels, fingerless gloves, socks, bowls, bags, purses, sachels, pillows, doilies....

I also agree that you should check out ravelry. Although it does help to have some idea of what types of things you may want so you can narrow your search.

I also love the one skein wonder books.

What about a hemp or linen skirt? Here's one from knitty http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hip-in-hemp#

Or something for your house? Here's some linen table runner patterns
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sear...=linen%20table

Have any bare spots on your walls? I could never pull a shawl/wrap off, but I've thought about making one and hanging it from a dowel for the living room.

Beautiful yarn - warm climate... knit yourself some bags. Purses, totes, clutches... You can still accessorize with wool with bags.

Yeah it seems I never really get around to me yet. I am a advanced beginner knitter so I am not that fast. I told myself I want to knit for my girls before they get too big for smallish projects. So now my 2 girls get jealous, it seems I am constantly knitting back and forth with their small projects. For me, I would at least like to make myself a hat this yr. My other stuff would be a cowl, fingerless gloves, a lacy shawl, a throw for the couch, a smaller lap throw for the car and maybe if i could one day have some time a "Shalom" sweater or "Tea Leaves" sweater! Ofcourse who knows when I will actually do these projects for me. I usually put myself last. My hubby would like a hat too...

I Love those! Are they on Ravelry, too? How do I miss such great patterns??

I have finishitis really badly these days, too. I think I just needed to find something good.

Do you have enough hair to make a cool band a helpful thing? I like the dreamswatch.

I am also really in like with those tops with the gathered, sort of empire wasteline (hides my three-babies-later mama pooch), so I am making the tomato top with some mods to give it the same look. Easy enough, no seaming, and fairly quick.

What about using some bulky yarn, like a cotten/wool mix for a quicker finish?

besides 2 scarves and 1 hat, I have NEVER knitted anything for myself.

But I'm going to attempt this-

Wish me luck!!
