Hi,

My 9 mo old DD who never was sick so far in her life , now has a cold and is running slightly elevated temps. What does one usually do in these circumstances? Can I give her Vit C? How and what brand? I am totally clueless and need some quick remedies. Am afraid of it getting worse.

Thank you mamas

elderberry extract is an excellent natural immunity booster; on the cold i would treat symptoms - saline spray and neti pot or hot steam (nusre in bathroom w hot shower running to create steam), run a humidifier or vaporizer at night ( i prefer vaporizer for cold/congestion, humidifier for more day-to-day stuff), tylenol if needed for fever (if uncomfortable), suction as needed

Can I give her elderberry extract when she is only 9 mo old? How do I give her that?

This is going to sound crazy, but it works. If she's really congested, chop up an onion and put it in an old sock. Hang it on her crib or by wherever she sleeps and it will really help break things up and keep them moving.

Otherwise just keep nursing and doing things to keep her comfortable. It's always a little scary the first time they get sick, but she will recover.

Is vicks in the vaporizer acceptable for a 9 mo old infant? I bought one just now and even a tube of vicks (says suitable for adults and children) but am not sure about infants?
i THINK its safe (i know i've heard of it being used in a 10mo old) but i cannot find anything to indicate dose and you do have to be careful not to give too much.
the regular vicks is not okay - the menthol isn't any good for infants. baby vicks is ok since it doesn't have any menthol in it, from what i understand.
also is she teething? that could also be contributing to the fever and congestion.

I checked just now...the vaporizer was ON for atleast 1/2 hour...it had menthol in it so shut it off immediately. When you suggested Vaporizer use...did you mean only water Princess Anika?

Do you think we caused her a lot of harm by giving her menthol infused vapors?

ours is a warm steam vaporizer (vicks) with option for adding a vapor tablet to the special holder. we have not added the vapors and just use water, but not sure how that works.....sorry i was confused on the original question; i know vicks vaporub is not safe, but the babyrub is bc it doesn't have the menthol in it, but maybe it has to do with since the rub is so close to the face...not quite sure. i highly doubt the vapors did any harm that short amt of time. would prly check with ped tomorrow though as to whether or not to use it.
i am working on finding an answer about the elderberry too

the elderberry depends on the brand and what else is added - best bet is to actually look at the label, but there are some that are safe for infants (just not sure which...)

Thank you - that was very helpful. She is doing a bit better today but her fever (although slight) comes and goes as her system is fighting the infection.

She got the bug from me - I have sore throat, strep, cold and cough too. Which cough medicine is ok for breastfeeding. I have Vicks Dayquil and Robitussin with me but can buy any other cough suppressant too - as long as they don't interfere with my milk supply.

Same with lozenges. I got the honey-lemon-ginseng one(has menthol which is spearmint and is bad for bm supply right?) and was wondering if ginseng was ok for breastfeeding? I don't want to let harmful substances seep through in my breastmilk nor my breastmilk supply to be reduced.

correct mint is not good for BFing, the halls fruit breezers don't have menthol in them and taste pretty good though - robetussin (plain) is safe, as is plain mucinex (guaifenesin, nothing added) - decongestants, including sudafed (and benadryl, but thats not decongestant) run significant risk of drying milk supply.
on ginseng, from kellymom.com:
Ginseng (Panax ginseng)

Panax Ginseng is not considered a "safe" substance for long-term use in lactating women. Ginseng may cause estrogenic side effects as well as platelet changes. The most common form is the American root called Panax quinquefolium L. (this is an endangered species). There is also an Asian variety (panax ginseng), also called Korean or Chinese ginseng. These two varieties are practically identical. No data are available concerning transfer into human milk. According to Hale, no pediatric concerns have been reported but caution is urged. Also known as white ginseng, red ginseng, panax, minimycin, and red kooga. Possible side effects include tachycardia and hypertension. A Review of 12 Commonly Used Medicinal Herbs (O'Hara et al) says, "We do not recommend ginseng use for pregnant or lactating women or for children until safety and efficacy are proven in randomized controlled trials." More on Is Ginseng Safe for Nursing Mothers? and ginseng in general.

Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherosides, Eleuthero root)

Little is known regarding eleutherosides and breastfeeding. Until more information is available, some suggest that Siberian ginseng should be avoided during nursing (more here). Others indicate that siberian ginseng is safe for nursing mothers: see Is Ginseng Safe for Nursing Mothers? by Dee Negron.

Hyland's has vit c tablets. My DD loves those compared to the generic "chewable" vit C.

Perhaps some raw ginger and/or raw garlic in a bit of maple syrup would help.

At 9 months...do you think she has some teething action going on? Perhaps some arnica would make her more comfortable.

And I love the onion in a sock idea...totally saving that!
