Nutrients for pre/post vomiting

Thread Starter
4 yr old just vomited for 1st time in 3 years...last time it was a BAD Norovirus type thing and it spread like wildfire. I'm in panic mode (and sensing a fire in my belly--hopefully sympathy pains!) This is ONE time I'm HOPING for food poisoning but I sincerely doubt it.

Anyway...I try to boost Vitamin C and many other things when we seem to be getting a cold but haven't really thought about any specific nutrient boosting to do for vomiting-type illnesses.

Any GF/CF TF food recommendations or nutrients we should focus on for pre/post vomiting-type illness? Or just ride it out with chicken soup and rice all the way?

TIA!!

If the child is no longer nursing (or is an adult) then I go with coconut water - it's a natural source of electrolytes. My kids don't always appreciate the taste so I've been known to add just a bit of fruit juice to it for flavor (apple, white grape...I'm all for relatively colorless things). The key is to keep people hydrated, food is of very limited importance at first.

Start out with just a couple of teaspoons or so every 10-20 minutes and work your way up as long as it is tolerated. If the child becomes sick, allow the child's stomach to rest and then begin again with just a couple of teaspoons. Don't worry so much if they get sick...keep offering it as they will absorb some even if it's only in their belly for a short amount of time.

If they're over 1 yr old and can make it 8 hrs without vomiting then I'd start offering some solids, but I stick with the BRAT diet - banana, rice, applesauce, toast. As nourishing as bone broth can be I still prefer to consider it in the BRAT diet phase of recovery. Once they're on the mend then I start large doses of probiotics to help repopulate their gut with the good stuff.

If the illness manifests itself in diarrhea without vomiting then I go with the BRAT diet and coconut water. They key being to give the digestive system a rest so that it can recover. Large doses of probiotics are key here as well, but I start it at the first sign of illness and continue until they are back to their normal selves.

we mostly do what the PP said, but also offer kombucha in small doses once they are keeping things down. the ginger one will offer probiotics, ginger to settle the stomach, and bubbles.
