heavy pee'r - peeing out of diaper all the time

what am i doing wrong with DS's diapers? he's peeing out of them constantly and it's always the back of his shirts / his back that get soaked.

i'm using disposables, pampers swaddlers. am i just not getting them tight enough?

i change him quite often, at a minimum of every two hours, and i find he's got wet shirts all the time. i'm going through clothes like crazy - to the point where i'm not doing good keeping up with laundry.

does this happen with other folks / babes too?

What size are you using? We used disposables on DS and when he started peeing out of them, I would move him up to the next size. The weight ranges over lap, but DS never made it to the high end of the weight limit before needing the next size.

i'm using the newborn size. he weighs 9 lbs right now. i'd have to go check, but i think size 1 (next size up) says it's for 10 to 14 lbs.

but this has been happening for almost the whole time he's been home - he's three weeks old, will be a month old this weekend) so i'm not sure it's a size issue because it was happening even when he was much smaller.

but, i do have some # 1 size diapers. i'll have to break them open and see how they fit.

It's worth a try. I know it's a pain to have to change outfits and wash clothes all the time

you aren't kidding! and, it's very frustrating to think we're ready for bed and he's in his nice warm jammies only to pick him up and feel that he's soaked again.

maybe try a different brand? like huggies or luvs, or kirkland signature (costco brand - has a 1/2 size) - different brands fit differently on different kids.

In addition to going up to the next size, I always make sure that DS only has either wool or fleece covering his diapers at night. That means no cotton onesies or basically any light material that would wick moisture up the back if it got wet. The wool is great for keeping the wetness in so it doesn't get all over his clothes and sheets and we can hopefully make it through the night without having to change the diapers.

Definitely switch to size 1's. If they are too long in the torso, then you can fold the part under his belly button under to make it shorter. My dd was 8 pounds when she was born, and the nurses at the hosp. put her in size 1's folded under like that.

Newborn size is notorious for leaking, they are really only good until the belly button stump falls off (because most have a little groove). Size 1 will absorb at least double what a newborn diaper will hold.

Pampers ALWAYS leaked for my babes!

Then I used Huggies or Luvs--no leaks!

I have the opposite problem. I hate huggies they always leak (out the crotch), but Pampers are fine.. I actually use 7th generation or Nature Babycare diapers (my fav because they are biodegradable) and both work fine for us. It really depends on the shape of your baby.

They all seem to leak for me. Right now on a 10month old using #3 pampers 12 hour all night diaper.. if they aren't changed every 3 hours everything is wet She's been having a rough time sleeping and I hate to wake her every 3 hours to change her. I have walmart also and they leak. I've gone through the other brands also. Should I buy plastic pants to go on the outside? She's 17# and #3's are 16+ and do go all the way up her back.

I would suggest putting a wool or fleece cover over the sposie maybe?

My DS is a supersoaker too, and even a double stuffed pocket diaper does not hold his pee at nighttime, but then I switched to using a fleece soaker and we never have any leaks now. I bet they would work to hold in the pee on a leaky sposie too.

I bought a heavy weight fleece one from Dancing bears, but there are much cheaper ones all over Etsy.

If you dont know much about soakers, you can use the same one over numerous changes. We use one soaker here all day.

I'm sure I'm way off base here, but peeing through disposable diapers in a couple of hours sends red flags for me. Are the diapers soaked? Or are they not soaked but have leaked because they don't fit right? If they are soaked, you need to call your pediatrician NOW. Peeing way too much is a sign of type 1 diabetes - that is one of the ways my baby was diagnosed - peeing through sposies in 2 hours or less (also insatiable thrist, fruity smell on breath, and eventually panting and lethargy). Again, probably not your situation, but felt the need to throw that out there just in case.

This happens to us constantly, always right before I think I have everything done and everyone is ready for bed, I check him and he and his bed are soaked. I have no idea how to stop it.

Same here. We were using Pampers and then DP's sister visited and bought an overabundance of Huggies. The Pampers never leak, but the Huggies almost always do.

One point if it isn't obvious: make sure your boy is pointing down. For me it was apparent to do this but DP said she hadn't really thought about it until I mentioned it to her.

thank you for this tip! it never occured to me, but i've been doing this and it def. helped.

also, we tried the size 1's and they are a bit big but ok. i've got about 10 newborn diapers left, so i'm using them up and then moving up to the next size.

Pavlovs - thank you for this thought as well. i will mention it at his next peds appointment next week.
