Gaining weight while BFing, losing while PG... why?

In my first pregnancy, I gained only 3 pounds more than the baby, placenta and amniotic fluid weighed. I ate well, had no serious morning sickness, and felt well the whole time.

Then, in the next 4-5 months, I gained 20 pounds while exclusively breastfeeding. My appetite actually diminished and I ate less than before or during pregnancy. I watched what I ate and I exercised. I felt and looked like a balloon all the time. This state lasted for 2.5 years, after which I weaned DD and immediately got pregnant again.

Now, at 27 weeks, I weigh just a couple of pounds more than I did at the beginning of pregnancy. Except for the bump (and the BIG baby inside), I look and feel much thinner than before this pregnancy and I'm eating like a wolf... even craving and indulging in really fattening stuff. It's like I have a metabolism again!

Has anyone experienced this? Was it breastfeeding that destroyed my metabolism last time around and what can I do about it this time?

i'm not in quite the same situation, as i gained more during pregnancy, but i too found that breastfeeding killed my metabolism. i had 20 extra pounds after my son was born that have not BUDGED since i left the hospital. i even spent a couple of months when my husband and i were both off going to the gym 5x/week and NOTHING MOVED.

hoping you get some good advice!

I found that I get postpartum thyroiditis... my thyroid outright stops after having a child... for a year or two (ironically closely related to how long I breastfeed for) So I gain weight and cannot lose it no matter what I do unless I am taking my pills.

When pregnant, my metabolism kicks up... I have been sick but still able to eat every day and have lost 6 pounds in the past month! Ive gained 5 inches and lost 6 pounds... but the doctors not worried. Im gaining where it matters and keeping healthy.

That's what happened to me with dd3.. and I'm on track for that happening this time around too. I'm 40w5d today... and I have gained...... *two* pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight.

While bfing dd3 I couldn't lose weight at all. She weaned completely at 40 months, but when she was about 2.5, and mostly only nursed *sometimes* at naptime and then at night, I was *finally* able to lose some weight.

I just tell people I'm built backwards.
