Language Arts for 2nd/3rd Grader

This is my first year homeschooling my son, after several years of homeschooling my daughter (who's currently attending the local public school for 8th grade, by her own choice.) I've recently realized that the basic approach that worked for her does NOT work for him, and I need to provide him with a lot more academic structure, as well as more activities outside the house and more playdates.

DD2 would sit and read for hours at a time (and still does, to the extend that she can squeeze it into her schedule) but DS hates to read and won't do it voluntarily. If he does read on his own, it's to re-read a Captain Underpants or Ricky Ricotta book. I have no problems with him reading Dav Pilkey books, but he's not going to learn new vocabulary, grammar, and literary skills from re-reading these books (at least not the way DD2 did by devouring the whole YA Fantasy section of the library.) She wasn't self-motivated with math so we used a textbook for that, and I'm doing the same thing with DS: having him do a page in the workbook or a page I wrote out for him each day. The school district's website has a list of all math topics covered in 3rd grade, so I'm using that as a guide.

So I need some sort of LA curriculum for him- either a workbook of some kind (not too expensive!) or a "how to guide" for me to create my own. I couldn't find anything on the school district website for LA the way I found for math, so I'm really at a loss here.

He's "technically" in 3rd grade (that's what I write on the official homeschool paperwork) but I think he's more like 2nd grade with reading and writing skills.

We use and like Writing with Ease and First Language Lessons - together they teach writing (either through copywork or dictation; my oldest is doing WWE 3, but we still use it as copwork as his spelling is not quite ready for that much dictation), grammar, listening skills and summarization. I believe it is completely secular (we aren't religious hs'ers, even though we teach religion); I can't think of any week that would not work regardless of religious views (this week ds#1 is doing copywork/narration from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which I know some view as Christian allegory, but to us it is just an exciting story - though admittedly I'm not big on allegory!).

The Easy Grammar series starts in third grade. It takes just minutes a day, but builds on itself. It doesn't look exciting, but it is a quick way to get the grammar job done! My dd does like that it gets straight to the point, and that it takes her VERY little time to get through it. But, she gets annoyed that she is always crossing out the prep. phrase.

We're also using Writing With Ease and First Language Lessons. We just started in January, but so far, they're working out well!

The lessons are short and sweet and super easy to teach. Very affordable. My daughter enjoys the lessons (and a bonus is that she now loves poetry).
