What is the strangest thing you've seen HFCS in?

I'm curious as to what the strangest things you've seen HFCS in.

I thought it was strange to see it in many store-bought breads.. yesterday, while grocery shopping, I was browsing the yogurt. Apparently Dannon uses alot of HFCS in alot of their products! Anyways... I haven't been as conscious as I should be in this regard..

Just wondering what you've found it in

I'm such a novice when it comes to cooking and all this stuff.. and I was just telling dh this yesterday: There's high fructose corn syrup in the "Plain Bread Crumbs" (store brand) that I bought. I had no idea to check those! I'd never bought bread crumbs before, hope I can find better ones next time!

Ketchup

I check everything for hfcs. The most surprising things to me were bread & crackers. They're not even sweet! Them it took me awhile to find bread w/o hfcs that didn't taste like cardboard.

once i think i saw it listed as an ingredient in baby formula. i don't remember what brand (i was trying to remind myself that no matter what, no matter how difficult, breastfeeding is what i have to do...). i think my heart stopped a little.

I remember seeing it as an ingredient on some of those samples I got in the mail...So awful! I really couldn't believe it!

Condiments in general have alot of HFCS, one of my biggest shockers was how BAD store bought dressings are. Bread, crackers, yogurt (even ones that claim they are healthy). Almost everything seems to have it in it. It is ridiculous.

Can anyone help me know what ingredients mean HFCS?

Here in Canada, I have yet to find anything labelled with the words "high fructose corn syrup".

Heinz ketchup in Canada does not have HFCS, (as far as I can tell...) it has sugar instead, but I think it has HFCS in it in the US.

Pop is not labeled as having HFCS in it, instead is says glucose-fructose, or fructose-glucose, or just fructose (don't recall).

Oh, I went and checked.... we don't have HFCS in the pickles I buy either (Bicks - probably the # brand).

Bick's Dill Pickle Ingredients (no sugar either, they have almost 0 calories):
Cucumbers, water, white vinegar, salt, dehydrated garlic, calcium chloride, seasonings, polysorbate 80, turmeric.

Bick's Sweet N Sour Pickles (which I don't buy....) Ingredients:
Cucumbers, water, glucose-fructose and/or sugar, white vinegar, salt, spices, dill weed, calcium chloride, polysorbate 80, turmeric.

So is the "glucose-fructose" actually HFCS? Or what is it?

I know this is common, but fruit juice. FRUIT IS SWEET!!!! Seriously. That is the most common, and the most ridiculous thing to put sweet chemical poison in, and who do you think drink fruit juice? KIDS!!!!

i wonder if HFCS wouldn't be less bad than polysorbate?

Barbecue sauce. And man, it was tough trying to find a brand that doesn't. And I made my own once, thinking I'd outsmart them all...til every recipe I wanted to try for barbecue sauce included ketchup (which itself has HFCS). AARGH!

Yes. Apparently, "glucose-fructose" is HFCS. I didn't know that for a long time.

As far as I can tell, Canadian food isn't quite as heavy on HFCS as American food, but it's still ridiculously high. Most brands of store bought bread have it (I need to get back to baking my own bread!), but I've found one or two that don't. It's in most condiments (last I looked, it wasn't in prepared mustard or Miracle Whip) and dressings. The stuff is ubiquitous.

You can buy organic ketchup, but it significantly higher in price. All of the organic ones (that I looked at anyways) only contain sugar. I justified the buy because I buy it like every 6 months maybe? It was funny the other day, dp had some and he said, 'holy cow! This ketchup ACTUALLY tastes like tomatoes!'

And I second the confusion on the grapples? I used to get them, but then had a few bad ones and figured it wasn't worth the money if they aren't even going to be good!

From the Grapple site (I just learned of these from this thread )

"The apple takes on no additional sugars or calories. They are not genetically altered in any way. The apple is as healthy as ever but now has the new exciting grape flavor. "
Hmm...

and

"With childhood obesity increasing at alarming rates, Grāpple® brand apples could go a long way to improving the eating habits of children and introducing them to more produce."
Bolded is the key word "could". If there's HFCS in there... not so sure about that claim!

ETA: the web site says that there's no HCFS in it... Apples & Natural & Artificial Flavor.

If it weren't for the artificial flavor, I"d be tempted to try them!

What are grapples?

I think the strangest thing I've seen it in is potato chips, like the baked varieties. And juice, that is just crazy. Juice is already sweet, why in the world does it need to be sweeter? And of course, why do tomatoes (like the crushed/diced versions) need it? It is so hard to stay away from it. We don't eat a whole lot of packaged foods, but it's hard to steer clear of it anyway.
