Fish Oil not safe

Just read this article: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/ConsumerNe...ory?id=9994049

My ND just put me on fish oil, and now I am concerned. It says it's been tested free of Mercury and PCB's but then I read on another thread somewhere that says my brand was tested and came up positive.

I'm concerned.

Are you taking it for the omega-3s? If so, have you considered taking one of the vegetarian DHA/EPA supplements? They're made from algae, which is wear the fish get their omega-3 fatty acids in the first place. The benefit is that the algae is tank-grown, so it shouldn't have the contaminant issues of the fish oil. I've been using DEVA because I find it doesn't tend to create fishy burps like some of the fish oils or veggie DHA supplements can.

Here's an assortment of vegetarian omega-3 supplements. I can usually find something at Whole Foods, but I find a better selection online:

I think with Fish oil brand is important.

The higher quaility brands like Carlson's or Nordic Naturals are known to be free of contamination. They use an independent lab to tests their oils. They are more expoensive than the other cheaper brands but you get what you pay for IMO

Brand matters. I always used to use Carlson's or Nordic Naturals, but recently I've switched to using Vital Choice's Wild Salmon Oil. Wild salmon is naturally low in contaminants(verified by testing both the fish and the oil), which means that no harmful molecular distillation is necessary, and all the natural A and D is preserved. Wild salmon oil has as much D as CLO, but somewhat less A. And loads of Omega 3's, of course.

Vital Choice uses low-heat processing, and makes their oil out of fish heads, which means the oil is higher in iodine, too. It's also high in the same antioxidants that krill oil is. Good stuff, made by a conscientious company. You have to mail-order it, though.

Thanks everyone.

I am taking it for the Vitamin D mostly. My ND just started on it. I am using the brand that was mentioned in the article as having the lowest level of PCB's....Twin Labs? Is there a way to see the different levels in the different brands?
