So we've been in and out of the hospital a ton in the last couple of months and we've been having increasing issues with L's colon not working. So we decided to move forward with the cecostomy (our GI had proposed it over a year ago and we've just been thinking about it for a while, we're slow. lol). So I talked to the GI last night and asked her about the actual stoma etc for the cecostomy. She said she wasn't sure about the differences, we'll have to ask the surgeon. But I thought maybe one of you might be able to answer my question.
So, they pull through the appendix and make an ostomy. So, the way they do it here with the open procedure is to place a tube for a while, then remove the tube and cath the ostomy for the enemas. I've researched a lot about the options and have seen the Chait trap door. My question is, if we go with the open procedure and then down the road have issues with the cathing, can you then put in a chait trap door? Or when you do it one way, will it always be that way? Like, are the actual surgical procedures different for each style? I just feel a little apprehensive about having it placed the way they usually do. I don't want him to be bothered by it and if the cathing is just as traumatic as the enemas are now, I don't want to be stuck with it. I'd rather much prefer having the chait trap door since we've already done buttons and such, so a little bit of plastic doesn't bother me. It just seems like it'd be less of an issue with him too. THat way I'm not sticking stuff in him at all.
I just don't know if you do the cecostomy if you can later go to interventional radiology and get them to place the chait.
Oh, and I don't know if anyone on here has one, but just wondering if anyone knows about this or knows of a place where I could ask.
