Fish from China

Is it safe? Almost all the fish I was looking at today was Farm Raised from China. I remember the 2007 reports and bans on seafood from China. Is that still an issue? Would you buy it? Why or why not?

Today I went wit some cod, but would like to have some others from time to time.

Thanks for the info.

I don't buy seafood from China but I am sure lots of people will have their own opinions.

Here is some information

We are in the middle of the country so good seafood is a real treat, it already has a footprint just by it getting to us, so I try to just buy the sustainably caught local seafood. I do get cod and orange roughy now and then but we usually eat tilapia, salmon and shrimp

From what I've heard, seafood from china is scary. Things like outhouses placed so that the excrement falls directly into the tilapia ponds.

I'm another who avoids seafood from China. I have concerns about safety and quality, and I also think local seafood is a better choice in terms of environmental sustainability/food miles etc.

I heard a segment on NPR. They talked about chicken/tilapia farmers. They put the chicken cages over the water so that the fish could eat the fish poop.

I haven't bought any since then

Here is an article from the NYT

Apparently China says it is working on the problem but I am rather dubious.

I avoid buying any fish farmed or fished in china. I too have heard horrible things about the tilapia.
