I need some help with choosing what kind of diapers and covers to buy and where to buy them. I know I'm going with prefolds & covers or contours & covers but I don't know which. My daughter is 2 and is close to potty training but we're not pushing the issue and she's not ready to tell us BEFORE she pees. We are going backpacking in the spring and should she not be fully potty-learned by then, there's no way I'm lugging disposables around. I tried pockets before and didn't like them. I have a friend who does prefolds and it looks so easy with the snappi's. I just need to know where to buy them for the best price and whether I should get prefolds or contours. Also, what cover is the best value? She is not a heavy wetter and prefers to not have too much bulk- she goes naked whenever she can so I don't want to load her up with a bulky diaper and make her uncomfortable. Also, in making our own laundry soap, what kind of bar soap would you use? Anything natural okay? glycerin? what kind?

And is there a good place to get them used other than craigslist??

Hi there! I'm currently using Unbleached Indian prefolds on my 7 month ds. I got my prefolds from Little Lions. He is currently in the capri size. I will be getting the next size up pretty soon. They usually have great prices and even better deals if you go with their "seconds".

I got my covers used off a mama on diaperswappers. I have a mix between Thirsties and Bummies....I find myself preferring the Thirsties.......I think I paid something like $4-$5 per cover including shipping.....i also have about 10 pocket diapers, but I only use them if the prefolds are in the wash......I LOVE my prefolds!!

I don't think many people go with the contours, really.. prefolds are more versatile, you can do different folds, or just trifold and lay in wrap (basically make it into a contour).

I also prefer prefolds over contours because of the folding options. I love Thirsties Diaper Cover and also their Duo Wraps! Great gussets and the duo wrap means you only need to buy 2 sizes (and yet they fit better than a one-size). I've been very happy with traditional prefolds...

As an update, we got econobums and really like them. They weren't a big investment and they work great.
