Could my tests be wrong?

I started getting symptoms 2 or 3 days before my period was supposed to start, heartburn, nausea, sore breasts, sleeping all the time (17 hours at one point), dizziness, craving food (I even craved something that made me nauseous), sensitivity to smell, mood swings, and back pain.

I tested (first response) and it came up negative. I didn't think about it much, I'm on medicine that might be able to give me heartburn (never had it in the months I took it, and I've only had heartburn maybe 3 times in my whole life, but you never know), I heard a stomach bug was going around making people nauseous, maybe I hurt my breasts somehow, I had forgotten to take my sleep medicine (that's never caused me to sleep 17 hours, but who knows), sometimes I just get dizzy, maybe I'm not eating the right foods, I quit smoking a while back (which can make you sensitive to smells and taste), I'm bipolar and I always have back pain, it's from being mugged years ago (but this time it was worse, and lower than usual).

So...it's been roughly a week. The symptoms are still there, and my period is now five days late, and I'm peeing a lot. I took another test 3 days ago, and it also came up negative.

I was on Trinessa (bc pill) before this, but I've gone off before and never had these symptoms, nor missed the first period after going off (I've been irregular in the past, but usually that showed up several months after going off the pill).

Sooo...could my tests be wrong? Was it too soon to test? Should I try a different brand? Am I being an idiot?

Also, I just saw my doctor fairly recently. She said I seem to be healthier than usual. Did a pap smear (came back fine), I've had fairly recent ultrasounds in that area for what turned out to be a gastroentestinal problem...I really don't think I'm sick or anything.

Well, if your periods aren't perfectly regular, maybe you just ovulated a few days late, and it was too early to test!

I truly don't know much of anything about this stuff...any idea when would be a good time to test?

You really need to know if/when you ovulated to know when it's a good time to test. If you did not ovulate then your period is not due at all, if you ovulated a week later your period would be due a week later. If you are waiting for your first period after coming off of birth control then your cycle may very likely be irregular. I would get some cheap tests and test once a week until I started or got a positive.

When did you stop your birth control pill? If you've stopped it recently, this may just be because your body needs some time to readjust. Its not rare to have irregular or longer cycle right after stopping the pill (but you didnt say if its recent or not, so this may not be relevant...)

I stopped at the end of January, right before my last period (Jan 30-Feb 4). My periods haven't been irregular the past few years, but I've been on bc all that time. I've had to go off bc a couple times, and those times my period wasn't irregular while I was off.

I took a third test, just because the symptoms were worse yesterday and wanted to try a different test brand, and that also came up negative. I'm going to wait a few days and start using cheap tests.
