Freakin love the son of grok breakfast sandwich!

harrietsmama--I think it's fabulous you're making GAPS work on a FS budget, and thrilled to hear your farmer's market accepts them. Awesome! We are avoiding all nuts and seeds now due to ds's intolerances, which has actually made cooking feel easier (not grinding all those seeds for baked goods.) I'm not doing GAPS, but almost am--I also do potatoes, chocolate, and things like guar gum that are totally not GAPS friendly...GAPS is what turned me on to primal/paleo eating, and I could see myself doing it at some point if I felt the need....

Check out the son of grok link elleystar posted--by far the easiest, simplest, fastest (and GAPS friendly) way to make 'bread'.

Thanks for the bloglink MyLittle Warrior! Do you have a jerky marinade recipe to share? I've got (free!) venison in my freezer I want to make into jerky but can't decide on a marinade...

I don't measure a whole lot, but here's what I do:

I start with about 2-4 lbs meat. I use what ever is on sale (grass fed organic isn't in the budget ) I've had good results with flank steak, brisket, bottom round, english roast, etc. Slice thin across the grain.

In a glass measuring cup, I just eyeball amounts

1/2 C worchestershire sauce
1/4 C soy sauce
2 Tbsp Franks Redhot sauce (use your favorite)
1/2 tsp each seasoned salt, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper
1-2 tsp liquid smoke

marinate over night in the fridge. Dehydrate at 160 in dehydrator, or 'warm' setting in oven until dry all the way through. Length of time depends on how thin you slice it. 4-6 hrs usually does it in the dehydrator for me. Sometime I'll pull out the thinner pieces after 4 hours, and let the thicker pieces go a little longer. Yum!!

Just an FYI, I've successfully subbed smoked sea salt for the liquid smoke.

Also sounds good.

I'm munching some as we type, soooo yummy. Today has been a very low carb day. I think I'm at around 17 for the day so far. I definatly can't keep this up long term, but after coming off such a crappy week last week, I really wanted to jump start this week.

IF'd breakfast
Lunch: 2 egg omlett with bacon and tillamook cheddar
Snack: 2 oz home made beef jerky
Dinner: planning a salad with chicken

I know I'm woefully low on veggies. I really don't like them, and I usually get most of my day's worth in a green smoothie in the morning, which I skipped today.

I'm definitely giving that Grok sandwich a try! Back before I went GF/DF, my favorite breakfast was a slice of bread slathered with CO and Kalles fish paste from Ikea (all natural ingredients, looks pretty TF, and tastes awesome!) and then topped with cheese and an egg. The McGOS will be my new Kalles vehicle of choice!

I found this blog the other day, and really like it. She does a nice job bridging the Paleo/Primal and WAPF camps.

On another note, I ate beans tonight and I feel uncomfortably full for the first time in several days (I'm otherwise eating 90-100% WAPF-friendly Paleo). I think they just don't work for me.

I don't make DS eat totally grain free. I do some TF muffins and such here and there for him and DH to eat. To be honest he wouldn't even notice if I did though, he's never been a big fan of bread and the like. He'll open a sandwich and eat all the insides out. All he truly cares about are meat, veggies, yogurt, and blueberries.

I would like some ideas on how to get more volume of food and calories into my DS, age 10. We are on SCD and he is just really hungry lately, going through a growth spurt I think. But when I try to just feed him more of what we already eat, then I feel like I am giving him too much protein, like hamburger and eggs, or too many nuts, like making more almond flour baked goods for him. We don't do much dairy, so that's one area. But, really, how do I fill him up? I have tried to increase his fat, I mean, we eat a lot of bacon and fatty sausage, I cook things in coconut oil, olive oil, and butter, I put raw eggs and coconut oil in his smoothies. But he just needs more food.

For those of you grain-free, how often do you find you need to eat? The basic 3 meals per day or do you need to snack in between meals?

I am planning on going grain-free. Right now, I almost always need to snack in between meals - even if they are protein and fat heavy. But I wonder if I cut out grains completely if my body would get used to that and not require the snacks?

I don't mind snacking - except on my work days when it usually is an annoying time interference.

Thanks for any tips!

I'm 3 months into a grain-free "lifestyle" change and I eat a very small snack in the afternoon - usually a small handful of almonds or a soft boiled egg. I'm EBFing a 3 month old though, so that may be part of it. I can tell you I eat overall way less than I used to. For the first couple weeks I felt like I was starving all the time, now I could honestly see myself being able to fast if I wanted to in the future (when not nursing of course). I used to have hypoglycemia issues and I was constantly starvingly hungry. It is like night and day!

I have good news! We have been doing a trial intro (at least dh and I) of raw local goat milk from a great source and we've had zero reactions. I've never been able to have *any* dairy in the past while nursing but my little guy is totally happy and calm. I haven't been able to eat dairy without feeling terrible for many years. I'm still slowly losing weight and feel really great. My nightly snack is a big strawberry goat's milk smoothie shared with dh. YUM!

We are still no/low grain and low/no sugar and everything else TF. We are doing great and on track! I feel great and my skin looks awesome! For lunch the other day we had chicken salad from leftover roasted chicken, with homemade mayo, relish, mustard celery and grapes, SO good (ate it w/a spoon). Also apple slices w/ almond butter and raisins. I want to do better w/ breakfast, but its usually a banana and homemade yogurt, but I feel like I should get more fats in. We do bacon and eggs for lunch or dinner frequently too. I did just make these brownies for a treat, they turned out SO good. I did use all almond butter and unfortunately didn't have/didn't want to make chocolate chips, but they turned out awesome anyway.

I think my daughter is going through a growth spurt, she is hungry ALL the time! I have to get more fats in her. I'm going to start with more smoothies and popsicles. I also recently made almond butter balls, 1 cup almond butter, 1 cup coconut oil, 1/4 cup honey. Mix together, chill, then roll into balls (I used a melon baller, but it didn't work that great). I'd really like to get this recipe lower sugar, so might try chocolate stevia powder instead of the honey next time or less honey and maybe some vanilla stevia drops. I'll have to experiment.

Keep up the good work everyone!

That sounds great! I definitely can have highs and lows and find when I am eating way more protein and fat I feel much better. It would be wonderful to be ale to go for longer stretches between eating.

Also wanted to add that I've made this soup three or four times in the past week now! The kids LOVE it! I usually also add leftover cut up chicken from roasting a chicken and only do 1/2 cup of the noodles. I wouldn't do any noodles, but its the ONLY way I can get my non-soup loving boy to eat it.

This is interesting to me about the kids on the growth spurts as ds (5.5) has been eating like crazy lately, but also growing as well. It is hard to keep up w/ his appetite!

As to meals I generally eat 3 meals and 2 snacks, but then some days just a couple of meals and no snacks. I just do whatever I feel like that day. I eat way less than I did before, but that didn't happen for me until I went 100% gluten free though.

I've heard of people who eat high fat (along with moderate protein and low carb obviously) naturally eat only two meals a day. And I find myself, too, on the weekends when I can cook a good breakfast with plenty of fat that it last me a good bit of the day and I don't need to eat lunch. Maybe a small snack late in the afternoon and then I'll be hungry for dinner later. I love it because I'm not constantly thinking of food or having wild blood sugar swings.
