Really awesome wooden block rec.?

My son is turning two next month and I think I want to get him some wooden blocks. The boys already have some bamboo blocks, but they're pretty small. They also have those giant cardboard bricks, but they're pretty big! I'm looking for the wooden blocks that they have at play centers. You know what I'm talking about? If not, just recommend your favorite

Thanks for the help!

My kids are a little older but they love "twigs" I think from "fat brain toys".
My mil also got them some super made in the USA blocks that are really soft.
Many toy catalogs sell building block sets of the standard unstained wooden blocks. One brand is Melissa and Doug.

We have a small set of M&D unit blocks, that get some play.

What gets the most play in our house though is a set of approximately 1 1/2 inch cube blocks with various pictures and designs glued to them. I picked them up at the estate sale of a child psychiatrist years ago. First my nephew used them, and now DS does too.

DS goes to a Montessori school where they have specialized blocks that teach concepts. There are the pink tower and the brown stairs and the knobless cylinders, all of which can be played with in multiple ways.

I've been tempted by the blocks that Maple Landmark make. I've gotten other toys from the maker, and have been very happy with them. However, between lack of space and cost, I haven't gotten them.

We have the Melissa and Doug unit blocks and they are wonderful. We have two sets now, which makes for even more building possibilities. They are the best for the money in my experience.

We also have some storebought Tree Blocks and some handmade ones that get tons of play. And a set of Fantasy Blocks by Haba which were pricey (I think $40) but they were a gift and they add a lot of color and, dare I say, whimsy to Ds's creations.

My brother gave the kids a gift card for blocks this Christmas and I was totally coveting those mad scientist blocks, but DD and DH both vetoed them and wanted some alphabet sign-language blocks instead (made by Uncle Goose).

The Uncle Goose blocks are wonderful. Big, sturdy, pretty. NICE blocks. Lovely, really. We have 2 sets of them and it makes for quite large structures.
