Lesser of two evils for baby food - BPA coated lid on glass jar or plastic tub?

I make my baby's baby food out of organic fruits and veggies, but there are certain foods that I just cannot get pureed as smooth as needed like green beans, avocado and peas to name a few. He will gag and practically vomit.

Some of these are made by baby food companies and their purees are the smoothness that I need at this point in time. I figure it's better for him to at least taste those foods and get to like them, and then as he progresses, I can add in my frozen pureed lumpier foods.

Now, which store bought container is considered better: the glass jars which apparently have BPA in the lids or the plastic tubs? I have been buying the Gerber organics in the plastic tubs, even though I hate the thought of using plastic. Anyone know of any scientific recommendations on which is the better choice?

Do the plastic tubs have BPA? Are they an OK plastic? If no BPA and are #2, 4, or 5 - then I would buy that over the BPA lid.
Here's a guide to plastics, if you're interested.

Another recommendation: Sprout Baby food, comes in foil pouches, and are BPA-free.

If you get the plastic tubs, maybe you can re-use them?

Personally, I choose glass when its available and #4 or 5 plastic if its not. But thats me. We don't do baby foods though, so I have no idea what # plastic the tubs are. Look on the bottom and it should have a recyling symbol with a number 1-7. 1, 2, 4 & 5 are OK. Avoid #3, 6 & 7

id go with option c, none of the aboe, lol. my daughter is 15 months and ie neer fed her any canned/jarred baby food nor have i ever puree anything myself. if a baby needs food pureed i think, baring some texture issue in an older child with special needs, they probably arent ready for solids. my daughter at oer 1 year, still thrives mainly on breastmilk. she is big for her age, has great teeth and is very healthy and happy. but if i HAD to feed packaged food id go with glass.

I never used prepared baby foods but I can tell you that a food mill will remove the skins of the peas as well as any fiberousness from something like sweet potato.

I can't understand why you are having such an issue making these smooth-

as stated a food grinder works wonders, so does a regular blender,
for green beans, simply cook them longer and save the "water" and use it for the child or with other foods, avocado, if you can't get that smooth with just a fork, it's unripe- and peas (what type?) again you may not be cooking them long enough, they blend up real easy

as for a container- Libby makes small glass container with SAFE lids (don't fill it up to the top and the food won't even touch it)

The Gerber brand I bought has various numbers on the bottom of the different flavors (i.e. 3, 10, 16, 24) and no recycling symbol. Perhaps it's their own internal numbering system. I am going to contact them to ask and at least get my voice heard about using safe plastics and no BPA in lids, etc...

I think I am better off with the glass though.

I would definitely choose glass over plastic (under the presumption that since the food isn't in contact with the lid much it would have less leaching than sitting in plastic). I'm not trusting of plastic and food though.....even the supposedly safe bpa free stuff. I believe there are still chemicals in there leaching - it is just a matter of time before we find out those are bad, too (call me paranoid, you wouldn't be the first!).

However, I'm with the PPs who mentioned just skipping jarred food all together. I just smooshed or chunked up little bits of things for DD to eat, and there were a few things (like green beans) I wanted her to try that I used a little hand cranked food mill for. Worked totally fine and we never bought any jarred food at all!

Didn't they ban BPA in baby products a while ago? remember all the baby bottle recalls?

I would go with the glass jars because in most cases the food isn't touching the lid at all, so there would be minimal transfer of BPA.
