When did your LO go from 2 naps to 1?

My son is only 11 months old, which I thought was REALLY early to go from 2 naps to 1. But he's been really hard to get to sleep the past week or so, and he's been staying up longer and longer. I don't want to deprive him of sleep, but he's SO difficult to get down for a nap now that I just let him play until he's exhausted and will pass out. And today he passed out so late, it's looking like he's only going to take one nap today.

So how old was your babe when they went down to 1 nap a day? Was it gradual or did it take awhile to happen? How did their schedule change (did they go to bed earlier/get up later/sleep longer)? Is there anything wrong with a younger babe going to 1 nap early? TIA!

DS went from 2 naps to 1 at 18 months. It happened all of a sudden. He just couldn't settle down for his first nap. He still wanted a morning nap, but he wanted it later. Obviously, that wouldn't work because then he would want a second nap later, too, which would push bedtime very late. So, I moved lunch a little earlier and avoided car trips during his morning sleepy times. From what I remember he started taking one nap from 12noon to 2-3pm. Bedtime stayed the same, around 8pm, but he started sleeping 11 hours instead of 10 hours at night.

DD went to one nap shortly after 12 months. I did feel like it was kind of early, but she was taking two 30-45 minute naps and it was driving me crazy esp since her naps never overlapped DS's nap. Her transition was a little more difficult, and still (at 16 months) she'll fall asleep in the car during what would have been time for her first nap. But, she's so social and busy otherwise, that getting her through until after lunch is usually not a problem. Now that she takes one nap, her naps are usually 1.5-2.5 hours...much better, and it takes place during DS's nap

11 months sounds about right, maybe a little earlier then some, but my first was down to one nap by a year, my dd not far behind that. Once in a while they would go back to two naps if it had been a particularly eventful day and they needed it.

DD dropped the afternoon nap at 15 months after a week long visit from Granny. Apparently they were just having so much fun together, Granny just forgot DD was supposed to have a nap!

She still has a morning nap at the same time as before, but it is a longer one, and her nighttime sleep is AWESOME now.

12 months and 9 months for my boys.

I'm babysitting a 14mo girl that I cannot transition to one nap for anything!

About 11-12 months. It was also when he moved up to the pre-toddler room at daycare. He adjusted well.

5 months & 7 months.

There is a *wide* variety in napping. After all, there are kids who are totally done the first half of their second year and others who are still napping in kindergarten!

between 10 and 11 mths my DD dropped her afternoon nap. I thought I would go crazy! But I survived and she gets plenty of sleep (12 hrs overnight and 2-3 around noon)

DS was about 2 years old, IIRC. Not sure whether he just needed a lot of sleep longer, or it's our schedule, it may be seasonal.

In the summer time, we try to go to the gym regularly in the evenings (~6:30 to 7:30 pm), which means it may be 9 pm when he goes to sleep, and then he wakes up about the time I go to work.

In the winter time, he usually wants to sleep as soon as I get home (~6 pm). So while he's at just the one nap now, he might revert back this summer... or he might be all right.

#1 was right at a year; just started crying through morning nap. I let it go for a week, then decided he must be ready to transition to 1 nap, so I started one nap that was in between the time his two naps had been. With #2, it was 15 months. She started crying through her afternoon nap. Again, I tried for a week, just to make sure, but then pushed her morning nap later.

Thank you for the replies! This makes me feel much better. I know there's a variety in nap schedules, but I thought the average was 14-16 mos to go from 2 to 1 nap. But I definitely think he's transitioning, and I'm excited about it. I've had to hold him for naps the last several months and I am thrilled to be down to only once a day holding him instead of twice! Plus, he's so tired, he actually took his nap on his own today (which is almost unheard of around here). So going to one nap may actually mean MORE free time for me!

Between 11-12 months old. His bedtime schedule has always been the same, regardless of naps. (around 9pm-7am). He usually takes afternoon naps on days with me and late morning naps with his father.

13 months, & like a pp said, when she started walking. It was abrupt, from one day to the next. She dropped her *afternoon* nap, which is a little unusual (mostly you hear about them dropping the morning nap) but we just worked over time at moving it back and now she takes a two hour nap in the early afternoon.

11 months for my first, and my 15 month old still takes two naps most days.

My 17 m/o is taking her second nap of the day right now. We thought she'd transitioned to one nap, but that only lasted a week.

At 10 1/2 months she dropped her second nap and ditched her paci (that she was never that fond of anyway) at the same time.

Our DD dropped one nap at 14 months when she started daycare.

dd1 dropped from 3 to 1 around 9 months. dropped naps at 2 1/2.

dd2 dropped from 2 to 1 around 9 months. If she were home full time, she would have dropped naps by now. She is 2 1/2. naps at school, but not at home.

DS went from 2 naps to 1 between 9 and 10 months. DD went from 2 naps to 1 between 9 1/2 months and 10 1/2 months. She will occasionally take a second nap still at 12 months, but it is rare and probably less then once every 2 weeks.
