What is this fruit?

Just picked up something new at the farmer's market. It sounded like "chermolla" (cher-moy-uh), but the guy had a heavy accent, so I may have it wrong. Looks like a spiky avocado. They said to wait until it's soft like an avocado, then slice it open. It has a pit, and should taste like a pineapple/banana sorta mix.

I tried to google but can't find it. Does anyone know what it is?
thanks,

It's a cherimoya. I've never had it, but have heard good things. Enjoy!

Thanks to both of you -- that's it! Glad I was close to the name at least.

It's not ripe yet, but can't wait to try it!

They grew all over our property when I was growing up (southern California). You're in for a real treat!

They are excellent! You want it REALLY soft, not just slightly soft, and the skin usually starts turning black as it softens, that's okay. Just be gentle with it.

I haven't had one in years... they're too expensive around here.
