The laws pertaining to when/how firearms and air guns (which are two totally different things) can be discharged vary from city to city. As does the definition of "protection". I suggest to anyone that wishes to use an air gun on nuisance animals as a means of protection to become familiar with their local laws first.

However, if it ever came to that, chance are I'd have already called the police myself.

A cat run is the best option if owners want to allow their cats outside. I have 3 cats, and will build a run for them.It is safer for them, and it is nicer for the neighbors. There are some really great runs that have been built that will give you ideas.

If I catch cats on my property I remove them so they are no longer a problem.I will not waste time and money on deterents,or taking the cats to their owners(if I know them).Roaming cats have a much higher death rate.It is spring here and the dominant smell is cat pee. Time to put out the traps.

Just for cats sells a booklet to build a run:http://www.just4cats.com/

Keeping what is yours on your own property makes for better neighborhood relations. If your neighbor has animals that tresspass they need to remedy the situation,or accept the results that happen with roaming pets.My neighbor paid over $400 after their husky came into my yard and bit up my dog.

Just wanted to add that I have read enough BYC posts to say it is very likely your neighbors dogs will eventually kill the chickens. Also, you can not have chickens and expect them to stay in their yard. She must install a fenced area,or AC should be called when the chickens roam.Cities have rules on hen number, coop location, and run.

You would be liable if the cat kills hens, but only if that happens in HER yard.Hawks will also take care of the hens. I have chickens too,and dogs, and the cats I mentioned. Does not mean I want neighbor animals in my yard.I will pay if my animals cause injury or death outside of my yard, but not if someones animals come into my yard.We have a 6 foot fence around our entire property so it is obvious where our property starts and stops.

Best wishes whatever you decide.
