Antibiotics and diaper rash

I have a 9 month old daughter. She was diagnosed with a UTI (she was having fever of 102 and smelly urine). So I gave them the urine sample and that was when leukocytes and blood were found in her urine. I was given the antibiotic cefdinir. She has been taking it since Thursday (3/4/10) She has developed a horrible diaper rash. It is really red, inflamed, and bumpy looking. Even the labia are getting red now. She had frequent soft stools. But the rash seems to have developed and gotten progressively worse so quick. Now I have no idea what to do for it. Even laying her on the change table causes her to cry. She cries when she poops. She screams when I wipe her. Even sitting her in water makes her scream. So I wiped with just water... screaming. I wiped with alcohol free wipes (earths best brand)... screaming. Put her in the tub with warm water...screaming. Tub with cool water... screaming. I don't know what to do. I feel so helpless. And I don't know how to even wipe her without pain. Is there anything that can soothe it? Should I ask the pediatrician about it? maybe switch the med? Is it a yeast infection? I'm lost. Sorry for the ramble but I just need some advice. Thanks in advance if you took the time to read all this and respond!

Are you using diaper cream on it? I would layer it on thick in the mean time and put a call in to the pediatrician to ask them about it.

Yeah sorry I forgot to mention that I have been putting on triple paste mixed with some grandma els for good measure since the rash developed. I will have to wait until Monday to call the pediatrician unfortunately. This kind of stuff always seems to happen on the weekend.

It could be yeast.
Whenever we get a bad rash we
1. Get as much air time as possible
2. switch to chlorine free diapers - My alternative dr. says the bacteria from the urine when they are sick mixes with the chlorine and causes a chemical reaction causing the bum to burn.
2. Mix up some distilled water and Grapefruit Seed Extract to spray on the bum and let it dry all the way. good for treating yeast. or you can use lotramin or monistat. I find the GSE works great.
3. Apply a THICK layer of diaper cream before the diaper goes back on.
we use Triple paste, dr. smiths or burts bees

Make sure she is on probiotics with the antibiotic.

HOpe your little one is better soon.

Thank you for the tips. I was in a panic and wanted to cry because she was just inconsolable when I changed her diapers. I started her on the probiotics yesterday after I calmed down and did a search on the forums! Today she has no more diarrhea and doesn't poop as often. So I think they may be working. We let her go without a diaper for an hour and then even let her nap with no diaper on. I didn't think about the chlorine in disposables making it worse! But we just put her in cloth diapers (gro babys when we were out and plain fitted diapers with no cover on at home). The naked butt time helped a lot! And I slathered on sooo much triple paste with a lil grandma els thrown in. The rash is very much improved. Has a little pink left over but she surely doesn't scream or cry when she poops/pees or when I change her or give her a bath. I don't think it was yeast thank goodness because it responded so well to the creams. Thanks so much for the tips!
