Newborn spitting up-projectile!

12 day old baby, I'm really engorged, so this might be why but I'm not sure: Last night after nursing, I burped her for 10 min and then she was just lying on my chest (me sitting up) for a few minutes. She started gagging/heaving so I sat her on my lap and she spewed up the WHOLE feed, like tons! It shot out far! Should I be worried, or is this maybe because she got too much? She does often cough and splutter while feeding lately since I've been so engorged....

I was told that spit up after every feed, and one projectile vomit a day are OK. More than one projectile a day (especially if it gets more frequent) needs looking in to.

Also, it always looks like more than it really is - breastmilk spew goes a long way!

Yes that sounds like an engorgement issue. My 7 mo still does that if he feeds when I'm engorged and it's so disheartening. Better to pump some out so your daughter doesn't have to swallow so much air and watery milk.

On the other hand, of it's happening a lot, like with every feed, definitely take her to the doctor. She's a the right age for pyloric stenosis to present, though that is more classically seen in little boys.

My DD did this for me it was a really strong letdown and my first baby. This time it's not so much, my son has barely done this ever, my DD it was a daily occurrence.

DD did this in the beginning too, especially if I gave her 2 boobs of milk in quick succession. Try feeding only on one side at a time, even one side twice or more if you need, and if you're too engorged, hand express into the sink or a towel just enough to stay comfortable and before feeding your baby. Resist the temptation to use the baby to relieve the worst of your engorgement.
