Mamas that use strollers--please advise me

My son was born in Oct. He is 5 mths old. When I was pregnant I ordered a Britax Marathon carseat because it seemed to have a great rep for safety. After it arrived I read many users complaining that it was unsuitable for a newborn. So, I registered for, and received a Graco Snugride. I also got a snap and go. When people would ask what I was doing for a stroller I told them that I would wait until I met my baby and maybe get a stroller around Christmastime. There was no way I could afford a whole "status stroller system" and I couldn't justify asking my family or friends to do it for me in this economy.

The snugride/snap and go worked out very well in the beginning. He was a tiny six pounder at birth, so I never regretted waiting to install the Britax, based on reviews. I wore him alot in the beginning, and we went through a phase where we would struggle to get him to nap--he would nap - in the moby if I was walking (once he was a couple of months old he hated being awake in the wrap, but when he needed to sleep it usually worked) and in the snugride carseat (if it were in the snap and go moving or in the car moving....kid needed movement for sleep.) So I haven't stopped moving until recently when he discovered the joys of napping laying down. Strolling with him through the steep hills of our neighborhood has become one of our soothing rituals. I still wear him A LOT in the moby (facing out now) or the ergo....but there is something that we all enjoy about the stroller. Often, it will make him happy when nothing else does--my husband has really loved pushing him in the snap and go--and my mother in law who can't really carry him that much (even I can struggle in the Southern California heat up and down these hills...) loves to take him for a walk once in a while.

So here I am. Christmastime has come and gone. He is getting too big for his snugride, so we are going to install the Britax. When we do so, we will be in the market for a stroller. We took him to a stroller store yesterday and I am overwhelmed. Oy! The options! When we walked in the store I was unable to fathom putting him in a "face the world" position. He can be quite a littler fuss-ter and when we face one another I can often catch him and distract him before he cries. I know that soon enough he will want to sit facing the world, but right now seems too soon.

But there don't seem to be many options (affordable or otherwise) of strollers in the store or online that can convert from "face mama" to "face the world" that aren't part of an entire crazy expensive system. We put him in a Bumbleride (which I had never heard of) and it didn't seem like a slam dunk. Babe didn't seem totally comfortable and it was a lot heavier than I thought and still so big when folded. I had thought about just getting a jogger (before I knew him - and before I realized how huge they are...perhaps not the best bet for an all purpose stroller?) My husband really liked the Maclarens and when we put the baby in one he was comfortable and happy as we pushed it around the store. The stroller was lightweight and since we do a lot of travelling and a lot of walking seemed like it would be a good choice. Except for the fact that it is an umbrella stroller and thus only faces out. And my little guy is still so young and fussy and well....maybe this sounds crazy--but I am not ready to not see him!

I got used to driving with him in the backseat very quickly, although I remember when he was born thinking that I would never be able to do that---is this another thing like that or am I right that he should be facing me....and if so what do I do since he has outgrown our current system?

Please, can any of you mamas recommend a stroller for me?

We have a jogger & use it but I mainly put him in the sling or other carrier if I want to hang with him. I think that you should get a stroller and you will get used to not facing him. I would check craigslist for cheap options. There are usually tons. I love the stroller but not the price. Up until my kids were about a year they didn't like the stroller and by a year I could handle him not facing me. Remember a stroller choice can be rather personal. I would go jogger if you do lots of walks on all kinds of terrain. Good Luck!

First, you will get used to him facing out quickly, just like you got used to driving with him in the backseat.

Second, Graco has a stroller that can be reversed. It's called the Flip It. http://www.target.com/Graco-Flip-Tra.../dp/B002OEV7IY I haven't tried it, but I'm still using the Graco Ride Lite that I bought when my five-year-old was 3 months old, so I really do like the Graco strollers.

I have a kolcraft countours stroller that my IL's got us - I love it, it works well and the seat can go in either direction. We got ours on sale for $100 but I see that amazon has it for $150 right now. Here's the link to the options 4 version but there is a options 3 version that is 3 wheeled

We love our UppaBaby Vista. It's not the cheapest out there but it's way less than a Bumbleride. DH and I usually wear DS (even now at 15 mos and a giant almost 30 lbs) but this stroller is worth every penny for those times when we either need to use it for whatever reason or just feel like a change from the Ergo or backpack. It's also great to have a high quality, lightweight, easy to push stroller for when grandparents visit.

The seat faces both forward and back and, though I don't think the company advises it, I can switch the direction of his seat with him in it, which is super handy. I agree that both you and baby will get used to having it forward facing but there are times when you or baby will prefer one way or another. You can also buy an attachment so that the your Snugride will snap into the Vista frame if you have another baby. Also, UppaBaby customer service is outstanding. I honestly can't say enough great things about this stroller.

Consider buying used.

We have the I'Coo which we love. It is not the least expensive option, but not the highest either. It is not only front and rear facing, but the height is also adjustable so my babe can be super close to me It also can be used as a high chair (front facing adjusted to the highest position) so you don't have to use the yucky ones provided.

I have seen them on Craigslist recently for about $250, which is a good deal.
Good Luck!

We went through many strollers with my older dd, which is funny because I also have more slings, wraps, and other carriers as well. We started out with the travel system stroller, which was nice, but huge and bulky. Best thing about it was that it reclines all of the way. Then we got a smaller cheapie $40 Carters stroller that we used most often because it didn't take up the whole trunk and I didn't want to pay so much for the maclaren (what I really wanted). Then we got a cheapie umbrella stroller which was about $15 because the Carters one broke and we needed one that was really small to fit in the car when we had it packed to the gills for a vacation. Finally, when our dd was 3.5, we were headed to Disney World and wanted something that a 3 year old could ride in and went on Albee Baby and got a Maclaren Triumph. We love love love it! The thing I really like about it is that for our next Disney trip, the baby can ride in it, and if my big girl wants to hop in for a quick break at the end of the night, it can hold her weight. It pushes so much easier than our snap n go, which we broke down and bought with baby #2. Now I tell my pregnant friends to skip the travel system and get a snap n go and a Maclaren. I still hate riding with my LO (also 5 months) in the back seat, but in the stroller, you can peek in and check on them much more easily. Also, my older dd was pretty intense as an infant and she loved facing out. I had a harder time with it than she did, but like the other mamas said, you do get used to it pretty quickly. I always stuck a carrier of some sort in the basket too in case she decided she wanted to be in there instead.

I also wanted to mention to be careful which position you use for facing out in the Moby. I have heard that the position where they are not seated (basically like the baby bjorn position where their legs dangle) is not great for them. I just read that the outward facing position in the Moby is included in this category, which I didn't realize. I think all things in moderation, personally.

For my first baby I researched all the options and got the stroller with the exact features I wanted. It lasted four years. Now, I just get something cheap at a garage sale or off craig's list or at a consignment shop and I use it! And it works just fine!

I have used quite a few strollers and the thing that I care about most is that it has a high enough handle bar. I am 5' 8'' and a lot of strollers are so low I have to bend down a little and that DOESN'T work. Baskets, cup holders, child tray, more recline options, etc...are nice but they don't matter that much. I really think that in a short while you won't care very much about not being able to see your child. Most kids like to see where they are going anyway.

I've also realized that I mostly use my stroller walking from my house so my preference is for a jogging stroller with big wheels. I use a smaller fold up stroller for the library or occassionally if I drive somewhere and then go for a walk.... Anyway, consider how YOU most use your stroller.

:agree x2

I love my Maclaren! It was one of the first things I bought when I found out I was pregnant. I wanted a lightweight, easy to fold stroller I could use from about 3 months, so we bought the Quest. It does recline, but not all the way, which is why it is from 3 months and not birth. DH is 6 foot 6 and I am not quite 5 feet and we are both really comfortable pushing this stroller. It does take getting used to baby facing away from you, but it easy to check on him.

I am large chested and find that even though ds likes facing out in the moby, it doesn't seem very good for his back. - it seems like his back is sort of arched, rather than being straight or more curved forward like it is when he is facing me- If you spread the straps of the moby so that they support from behind the knee to across the baby's bottom, you should have more support like a "froggy" position, rather than dangling.

good luck stroller hunting!

I LOVE my Maclaren (Quest) model. I've been using it since DD was around 4 months. It is so light and easy to throw in the car and travel with (I do a bit of flying and it's easy to get through airport security etc..) It was expensive, but worth it. When I stop to look at something or talk to someone, etc..I turn the stroller to face us so she can see what's going on...
I also have a Phil and Teds (jogger stroller) which I bought first and it's terrible! Too big, heavy, clunky, the brakes are really hard to put on and off.

We have a Maclaren Volo which is one of the cheaper models and it has been GREAT. It doesn't recline at all, but if your little one is sitting up, it's ok to use. It turns easily (with one hand), folds very small (important for us since we have a tiny family car), and the handles are higher than most other compact strollers.

I have this one too and love it.

my DD is 4 months and she has decided to face out on her own. I wasnt intending to do it because of what I had read, but when I have her in the sling facing me she is hard pressed to do a 180 with her neck and see things. So I started putting her lotus style.

I started using the stroller when I had to put her down for a min at my chiropractor visits, and she seemed really comfortable in it. she would cry (high need baby) but as soon as I started moving it she was happy again.

She is getting heavy now so im thinking to use the stroller more than the sling, as she doesnt mind it and likes facing out.

At the grocery store, i used the cart seat with this http://www.amazon.com/Leachco-Sit-Se...d=8U4PQAYK8Q9K
and she did pretty well (she is almost able to sit up by herself). but again she was trying to turn around and face out, it was pretty funny.

we have a Baby Jogger City Mini, http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Jogger-Ci...8070789&sr=1-1 and it maneuvers very well, pretty light weight, and easily folds and unfolds, can do it one handed. also can lay the seat back completely flat easily, and the shade has a few windows to see baby while pushing.

we almost bought a Stokke stroller and the likes because of the bassinet and the whole facing us issue, but man that would have been a waste of money on many levels. pheww

I have a used peg perago venizia-- I couldn't justify the expense of a stroller system, but really wanted the face mama face out option and a basinett. so I started trolling craiglist for the venezia. I paid 30 dollars and got the exact stroller I wanted. Now that we are using it more and more, I'm so happy with the amount of money I spent.

Buy used, buy used, buy used!

If you are outside walking a lot I would totally go with the jogging stroller because it handles so much better though I don't know of any that are reversible. We have a Bob that we got used on Craigslist in awesome condition and it is the most amazing, light as a feather stroller.

The Contours looks great too because the reviews say it is good for all terrain.

It was hard to get used to the outside facing position for me too and I was stopping a lot to look at her and check on her but she really did like looking out.

We got a big jogger w/ DS1 and have almost never used it. We live out in the country so theres realy nowhere to walk *to*, and its so huge that if I put it in my car there is literally *no* room for anything else...

As a result last summer I bought a Baby Planet stroller and really like it. Its a bit bigger than a McLaren, but also just seems a bit more substantial, w/ a slightly bigger basket (I think anyhow). It lives in my car quite happily and Ds2 does quite well in it (born 8/09 so just a little bit older than yours), and Ds1 still fits in it perfectly fine too (born 3/07).

If your just going to be using it at home size isn't an issue, but if you plan to travel w/ it at all, think about how big your car is and how big it is folded up. Good luck!!

I love babywearing, but my LO is huge for his age so we've had to move to strollers sooner than I would have liked!

I did a fair amount of research on strollers - We have the Baby Jogger City Mini for the car, and a Phil and Ted for long walks from the house. Both are great! The BJCM is small enough to go most places, has an awesome sunshade, folds really easily one handed, and fits well in the trunk. The P&T has nice big wheels for long walks and we love it that it can be used as a double, both for friends and for our next baby.

Buy Buy Baby has a good selection of strollers to test out in the store, then you can try Craigslist. I didn't mind buying both of ours new though since I found them on sale and they have great resale value.

I have two hand-me-down strollers. The first is older and a Graco and works fantastic. Olivia also loved her stroller rides last summer also working when nothing else did.

The 2nd hand-me-down is more fancy, but it is heavier. I do like cup holder and place to hold diaper bag and purse.

We are both looking forward to stoller season 2010!
