For whatever reason I can't post in the diaper review area to I am asking this here. Everyone says the gdiapers disposable inserts aren't great, but has anyone tried the cloth inserts? I was really excited about these because they are so cute and I can afford them. I have my own washer/dryer so washing the cloth inserts would not be a problem, but if they do not work well I will look for another option.

I haven't used them but my initial reaction when they finally made them available was that they are really expensive! Every insert I've ever tried fits just fine into a gDiaper cover and lots are less expensive. You can also use prefolds or make your own inserts. But maybe I need to look again, perhaps the price has come down if you guys are saying that they are affordable.
FWIW, I think the gDiaper flushable inserts are FANTASTIC. We don't use gDiaper covers anymore and I never used the flushables full time (and I never flushed them when I did use them) but I found that they work really well for travelling or for use as a booster in an AIO (that was our overnight solution for about six months till DS stopped wetting as much). I've even just laid one inside a cover - Thirsties or Roibos - with great results. Never a leak and much easier on my concience than a typical sposie.

This may be the best place for me to get an answer for my question. I have used gdiapers with prefolds in them for my two kids and it has been great. My kids are very close in size despite the year in age difference so I was able to use the same size cover for both. Now they are both outgrowing them (just in time for baby #3) and I just can't swallow the cost of buying all new covers. I have tons of prefolds and I am trying to figure out what to do next. I am thinking maybe just pinning them on? Then using those pull-on plastice cover things? I am into cheap not trendy but I haven't had much luck in researching my options. Too busy doing laundry and changing three kids' diapers! Hoping for some suggestions on cheap, effective covers for the two older kids. I didn't really do much cloth diapering research to begin with. My sister gave me the gdiapers and my mom gave me all the prefolds from when I was a kid and I just kind of jumped in. I haven't had time to go through all the posts to glean the information I need specific to my situation. From what I can see, the only thing out there are the super expensive trendy brands. How do I go old-fashioned?

I have 2 g diapers and I've put my own cloth into them and they've held up okay with DD. Usually a microfiber towel surrounded by a newborn size flannel prefold. I've also taken out the waterproof part and put a regular diaper cover over the whole thing.
I don't use just prefolds, but I do use the cheap gerber covers. I have some homemade fitted flannel diapers that I stuff with a gerber prefold and then pin closed (Rita's Rump pattern - it's free). I buy the gerber covers at babies r us or walmart. I like the diaper pins from Dritz (hancock fabrics) best, but I use pins for babies r us also. The covers work really well with DS, he's now 26lbs and in the 24month size covers. Another option you have with staying fairly "cheap" is buying a cover like prowrap (about $6 each) and then trifolding it and sticking in the cover. For my newborn, the gerber covers don't work well yet because her legs are too skinny. I really like the Thirsties covers for her.
And another suggestion, get at least one of those older kids using a toilet!
I'm going crazy over here with just 2 in cloth, I can't imagine three!

I just started using gDiapers. When I bought the gPant pack, there were no inserts to be had anywhere locally. The store that sold the pant did not have the disposable, biodegradeable, or cloth! And my newb was very tiny, so I had to carefully choose what went between his legs. I could fit almost anything in the pant, like a flat-fold, pre-fold, or burp cloth. But since he was tiny, I used plain old terry washcloths. Then went to burp cloths. When the store started carrying the cloths, I bought a pack. They are ok. Not as customizable as a burp or wash cloth though.
Have not tried the disposable or compostable ones though. Probably won't. I will either use the gDiaper, my old cloth ones, or flat-folds.
Good luck!

i prefer using a prefold instead of the gcloths. for my DS (who is not even 3 months yet, and not even mobile enough to roll over yet), the gcloths always shift and bunch up inside the cover. but the diapers might still be a little big on him, even though he is within the weight range indicated.
