My dc are older, our youngest is 8. I picked up a Mothering Mag at the HFS when I was preggo w/ my oldest in the mid-90's.
While I already knew I wouldn't spank our dc, I was unsure and scared about how to discipline. My dh was never spanked, I am a survivor of >you name it<abuse.
I hs our dc, and recently found this site. I have been somewhat active on other hs message boards, but I am always faced with moms who spank or even follow methods prescribed by dangerous authors. I can't stand it anymore!! Our dc are far from perfect, but they are kind, sensitive, confident, compassionate, generous, sweet, smart, loving, able to discern when to obey and when to choose not to. They are sassy, witty, and spunky!! And, they are Jesus-loving dc, who love people because of WHO they are-not because their skin is a certain color, they wear certain clothes, or are a certain religion.
I must say however, they have a line they draw when judging and dealing with others! For example, I have a 13yo dd. She won't babysit for families that spank. *We* will not allow our dc to have playdates w/families who spank. Don't get me wrong, we'll meet them at the park, museum, etc..But we will not let dc play at their homes. Our oldest was traumatized when she was around 7yo, and witnessed a mom PADDLE her 2yo w/a wooden spoon when playing with the dc's older sister.
We've done the best we can, never resorted to physical punishment, verbal abuse, and used creative means of disciplining. Have I cried and screamed when utterly frustrated? Yes! Have I ever wondered if a good spanking or slap across the face was the answer? NEVER.
Thank you to Peggy, and all those who are willing to step outside the mainstream(or cultural way) and seek out alternatives to physical or verbal violent parenting.
