i took out all my cloth diapers to wash them. and they smell musty! i have wool, fitteds, pockets and pre folds. how the heck do i get the smell out. i washed them and it did not work. the wool smells SOOO bad and i LOVE my wool!

so lay it on me. what do i do? please tell me i can save them!

i have been working so hard on my stash. i WILL have a little one, one day to put them on so PLEASE tell me i have hope!

so how do i get the smell out?
and so this does not happen again how should i store them once i get the smell out?

I would wash everything again and add a little vinegar or baking soda. Then, I would lay everything out to dry in the sun. Have the sun take the smell out for you. I hope that works. My kids came in such quick succession, I never had time to store anything. Everything was always in use!

Good luck. I hope this helps!

vinegar in the rinse cycle always works to get the musties out for me. Seems like lots of stuff that comes from goodwill smells musty (at least to my super sniffer, even when not pg.)

I do a wash on the warmest water the fabric can take with the regular amt of detergent, or a tiny bit more; then a double cold rinse with vinegar in the fab soft dispenser (so I guess it gets dumped in during the first rinse?)

You could use a downy ball with about a 1/2 c of vinegar in a top loader. in my front loader, I think I use 1/3c, but water it down in the dispenser.

I dont know about vinegar with covers, lots of mfrs say no vinegar with PUL- so probably just wash, rinse, and sun.

The sun is a great idea!

The only thing I worry about with storage is heat- if it's really dry and hot, then the elastic in your fitteds and covers might get dried out and stop working. I'd probably put it all into space bags once everything is totally dry and clean smelling. that will keep your wool safe from pests, and should keep everything safe from moisture that makes things smell musty.

Also, I HAVE used febreeze on really musty smokey smelling sweaters from freecycle. I gave each a good squirt with febreeze, then washed with the same routine above about 2 days later. that really really helped.

thanks mamas! i hope it works! what about the wool?

the febreeze thing worked on wool sweaters from freecycle. Though, I was washing them with the intent to felt. My first attempt would be to air the wool outside in the sun for as long as possible during the day, and bring them in before dark (to avoid more condensation and also bugs. eww.)

I'd do that a few days in a row then wash them as per care instructions.

Good Luck, it must have been a horrible feeling when you opened that package!!
