My head doesn't fill with blood, but my heart pounds like crazy when I have them. They've been doing this to me since about week 20, though. Probably has something to do with the blood being redirected during the contraction. When the muscle tenses up, it drains of blood. (this is why it's dangerous for a baby if you don't have rests between contractions.) The uterus is big, so it makes sense that we'd feel the blood going somewhere else when that happens.

In Chinese Medicine/acupuncture there is a meridian called the "Chong Mai" or "Sea of Blood Vessel" It goes from the uterus, to the kidneys, to the stomach, the heart and then the face. It is a major meridian involved with conception and gestation of a baby. When the uterus contracts, the "Qi" in the vessel is directed upwards and thats why you can get nausea (Stomach), racing heart (Heart) or flushed face (Face).

Its been really cool for me in this first pregnancy to experience these things and be able to feel the whole meridian pathway engage. Not sure if this stuff is interesting to others, but I thought anyone who has had acupuncture might be interested.

Not sure either, but my heart pounds crazily during them, it's so annoying and frustrating. The good news, I think, is that I had this w/ my last pg too and was so worried about labor, like is my heart gonna pound like this during every contraction?? But, turns out once I was in true labor all that weird stuff stopped thankfully!
Maybe someone out there knows why. I always feel like something is getting compressed in there that shouldn't be....? (BTW I'm 38 wks pg)

Wow, glad I'm not the only one! My heart pounds and my face gets flushed during BHs. I just thought I was weird, but it makes sense now!

Me too! My midwife had never heard of it but I told her I did some internet research and found other women feel the same way too. I felt this more early on in my pregnancy. Now at 28 weeks it isn't as strong and instead I feel like I am going to pee everytime I have them.
