How to make cats stop SCRATCHING??

Without have them declawed? I really don't want to do that. But they scratch everything, furniture, the kitchen cabinets (landlord's going to love that!) They have a scratching post which they do use and they love getting inside and scratching cardboard boxes so they have a couple of those available to them all the time. Yesterday I opened the windows for the first time in ages and they WOULD NOT STOP scratching the screens. I finally just gave up and closed to windows. The furniture I can deal with, it's old anyway, but I love having the windows open and them scratching holes in the screens and getting out and letting bugs in is not going to work for me! Anything I can do? TIA

Keep nails well trimmed, have appropriate areas they can scratch.
There is also a product called Soft Paws http://www.softpaws.com/ that are little covers that go over the nails.
