For those with life threatening food allergies...

Do you allow the offending food(s) in your home?

My 3.5 yo has an anaphylactic allergy to egg and while we don't outlaw it, we certainly don't eat egg like we used to (we used to eat them daily and now we eat them about 1x/month).

We don't have any of my son's anaphylactic allergens in our home--that includes products with trace contamination with his allergens. I don't restrict his non-life threatening food allergies in family members though.

I think this can somewhat depend on the degree of reaction. My sister has kids with peanut, dairy, and egg allergies. For the peanut, because nut allergy reactions can be SO severe, she keeps it out of her house (and the rest of us did as well when her kids were little). For dairy and egg, although the reactions are anaphylactic, at least for her kids, they're *less* serious (we're all well aware the next time it might be more serious), so for those, she's just really careful, but her other family members consume dairy and egg, in the house.

We keep our house free of eggs, peanuts and tree nuts. We did this as soon as we found out about the allergies (about 7 years ago). For us it was just easier than trying to keep the kids out of certain foods. Also, if we have someone watch the boys they do not have to worry about what they can have and can't.
