Questions for a new doctor

Thread Starter
I have recently lost faith in my doctor and her office and have thought about looking for a new pediatritian for my kids. I know that a new place may not answer these questions over email or fax, but I can at least try instead of having to drive around to interview new pediatricians. I was thinking about sending this to the doctors I am interested in. Any suggestions, comments, other questions you think I should ask?

To whom it may concern:

Before I spend the time bringing my children in to interview for a new doctor, I would like to know the answers your practice has to the following questions. This will help me to understand if your practice and my family would be a good fit. I don’t want to waste either of our time if our beliefs are drastically different. I feel it is important for my doctor and I to work as a team. The only way we can do this is if we have similar views and goals in mind when it comes to the health of my children.

1. How do you feel about parents who have homebirths? Do you have any clients who have done so?
2. Would you recommend a boy be circumcised?
3. What care would you recommend for the uncircumcised penis?
4. How do you feel about parents who choose not to vaccinate?
5. Are there any vaccinations that you believe more strongly in than others?
6. What suggestions would you give a parent to deal with thrush, other than medication?
7. How many times will a medication be recommended if it is not effective?
8. What charts do you measure against for growth/weight? The CDC or the WHO?
9. What age do you recommend breast feeding until?
10. What suggestions would you give to a mother who is not producing enough milk?
11. How do you feel about co-sleeping?
12. What are your thoughts on growth hormones in food versus eating organic/hormone free products?
13. Does your staff also have similar views on the answers to these questions? If I will also be working with nurses and other help, it is important that we are all on the same page.

Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions. If there is anything you would like to add, please do so.

Sincerely,

It is an interesting idea, but I can't imagine that many doctors would take the time to fill it out. Most docs I know are super busy during their hours, and filling out that questionnaire would take quite a long time. Also, many doctors with alternative philosophies are already so sought after that they might not feel the need to fill out parent questionaires on their own time in order to get patients.
I would definitely take that list of questions along to an interview with a doctor, though.

In order to narrow down the number of doctors when I was looking for a pediatrician I asked for names from several midwives I knew and respected. That way I didn't have quite as much of a search ahead of me, and knew a little bit about the doctor's philosophies before going in for an interview.
