I live in Texas. I just saw this on the news today. Texas is the largest textbook consumer in the world, not just in the US. So textbook makers have to submit to Texas educational standards in order not to lose a great customer. So when Texas redefines it's educational standards it affects schoolchildren all over the country.
I hope this isn't true. American children need to learn that America is great because of the struggles and hard work of "We the People".*Apparently the problem is that they propose to re-write history to erase all record of protest and struggle for freedom in America by minority races. You know I was taught that America was born from struggle and Protest and fighting for our Rights to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And that if no one fought for it we wouldn't have it.*
Paraphrasing the extensive summary from this link:

Quotes:
"initially tried to purge the standards of key figures of the civil rights era, such as César Chávez and Thurgood Marshall, though they were forced to back down amid a deafening public uproar. They have since resorted to a more subtle tack; while they concede that people like Martin Luther King Jr. deserve a place in history, they argue that they shouldn’t be given credit for advancing the rights of minorities. As Barton put it, “Only majorities can expand political rights in America’s constitutional society.” Ergo, any rights people of color have were handed to them by whites-..". * End Quote
I'm not sure what can be done. *It was just on the news yesterday. They said the initial vote was in January and the final vote is in March, around the time they count ballots from the election (which is now, we just voted last week).
I did find this one site that asks people across the country to send an e-mail to the Texas board of education. *And I sent my e-mail today. *It's the "participate" button on the the top right corner:

It's not just about Cesar Chaves, it's about Thorogood Marshall and many others and a new spin on our history. *The hosts of that web page are the united farmworkers. *I re-wrote my note in the protest to say what I've said here. *The final vote is in March.*
