Is it possible to get teeth this early??

DS is not yet 4 months, but I think he has signs of teething?? I dont know what to think about this, I dont have any prior baby experience other than my DS

For a about 2 weeks now he has been:

Drooling a LOT
Sucking/gnawing on his hands constantly, or anything you put in his mouth. He especially likes to gnaw on mommys finger.
Much fussier than normal
Not wanting to sleep, and not sleeping as deeply
Biting on my nipples while nursing (OUCH!!!)
Much gassier than has been normal for him
Crying. This is the one that breaks my heart, before this DS only cried ONCE at the Ped office when we had to check his bili levels in the past few weeks we have had a few times of outright crying with tears and a red face, and it takes a while for him to be consoled even with mommy trying to nurse him.

What do you guys think? Does this sound like teething, or just normal stuff for his age?

Yep, my son got his first 2 teeth [both at once] before he turned 5 months old. Then he got the next 4! yes really, all at once. He's now 5 and a half and has all the back ones and 5 front grownup teeth.

A friend of mine was actually born with teeth - rare but it can happen...

Yes! My DD started drooling and having teething pain at 2 months. She popped her first two teeth on the same day at 4 months old.

My 2-month-old has been doing those things and at his 2-month appt the doctor said he was showing signs of teething. I asked whether it was too early and he said that it would probably be a couple of months yet before they come through, but there are babies who get teeth as early as 4 months.

It is actually very normal for infants to have increased drooling and gnawing at the 2-3month mark and parents very often mistaken this for teething. If there are red swollen or tender gums associated with those changes in behaviour, then the child is probably "teething".

He could be going through a growth spurt instead?

My son had his first set of teeth emerge when he was 4.5months so his increased drooling and gnawing at 2.5months was not likely due to teething.

Both of my kids started getting teeth at 4mo, so it's totally possible.

Yep! My son cut his bottom teeth by 3 and a half months and he just cut his top teeth last week at 6 months.

My niece got teeth at 2 months and my DD got them at 3.

dd2 got her bottom teeth at 3 months!

My DS had the same symptoms around that same age (he drooled so much he would soak through a bib in a few hours) but here we are at 7 months and still no teeth. Not that I'm surprised - my oldest didn't get his first tooth until he was 13 months old, and my middle two got their first teeth both at 9 months.

Everything I have read says most babies start teething at 12 weeks.

My son was pretty spot on with that too!

Teething doens't = get a tooth though! lol Those teeth can shift under the gums for ages before they even emerge (the molars are a pain for this!)! Whilst my son started teething at 12 weeks, he didn't get a tooth until 6 months!

And you know - some babies are just born with teeth! lol

My son got 2 teeth at 4 months, and 4 more within one week at 6-7 months. He's now getting his 7th tooth at 10 months. He was 5 weeks early, also.

Yup, it's totally possible. My son got his first two a little before he turned four months. What you're describing sounds like what he went through, but there's no way of really knowing whether it's teething or not 'til the teeth show up.

DS2 started doing all that when he was 4 months but didn't get a tooth until 7 months.

We had teething symptoms from 3 months until the first two erupted at 6 months. Then, the day after eruption, teething symptoms were gone. After 3 months of them! It was weird.

Seems like there is no real pattern then!!! Thank you so much everyone for your replies, its so hard to watch your LO be upset!

I bought him some teethers, but he only likes one of them. Well, he LOVES it actually lol. I have to hold it for him and boy does he get mad if I stop!! I wish he would like one I didnt have to hold constantly! I also ordered him an amber necklace. Anyone here use one??

I never tried the amber necklaces. But I can relate to your having to hold on to the teethers for your LO. We had to do that with DD because she was too little to do it herself.

We also did gum massage with our fingers which seemed to help a lot. And we'd put an ice cube into a wet washcloth and hold it there for her.

You could try homeopathic camillia as well. Hope you find more things to help.
