What type of snow shoes keep the snow out?

Ok, so we live in a sunny climate, so please educate me on snow shoes.
I took my childern to the mountains a few weeks ago to play in the snow and we managed to just a few minutes before we got snow into our snow boots and gloves. What type of snow shoes help keep the snow out? I want to take the kids back to the mountains to sled and just play in the snow.

The more important question is what were the snow pants like? If kids are playing in the snow then they are going to get snow in the boots unless they have on a pair of snowpants that go over the boots.

The gold standard for keeping snow out is Sorel. Ties up at the top so you can make sure the snow doesn't get in.

Of course Mom didn't buy us Sorels, sometimes I had to layer plastic bags inside my boots to keep my feet from getting wet. Much cheaper.

I use snow pants with an elastic inner cuff that goes down over the top of the boot. That is what keeps the snow out of the boots.

If you don't have snow pants and are just wearing regular pants tucked inside snow boots, in which case wearing the pants over the top is just going to result in no snow in the boots but cold, wet legs then maybe gaiters would help?

I've no idea if they are something you could buy/make. They're like waterproof legwarmers.

I had my DS wearing rain boots. Socks and babylegs legwarmers were inside the boots. A lightweight pair of knit pants underneath a heavy, long pair of fleece pants. The long pants were fastened with rubber bands over the boot. That worked fairly well for 20" of snow, but with 30" of snow, and huge snow piles, I just had to keep scooping the snow out of his boots and re-positioning his pants/rubber bands.

His gloves were tucked up inside his sleeves, so he usually didn't have a problem getting snow there, but his jacket has snug cuffs.
