breastfeeding and anesthesia

hi all, i have been blessed with kidney stones. the one stone is not passing on its own - it has been over a week - went to urologist yesterday and he suggested that if it does not pass by Monday (it would be 2 1/2 weeks since I had the initial kidney stone attack) that I have a procedure done to try & remove it. NOt sure what it is called, but he told me i would be put under with anesthesia. Does anyone know how long I will be unable to breastfeed? Please let me know! I need to figure out how much I will need to pump for my daughter. Thanks!

You will not be able to breastfeed your daughter until you have 'come out' of the anesthesia fully enough to be able to hold her safely. Once you can hold her safely you should be able to breastfeed her safely.

If you are concerned about specific medications, you can always ask for a list, or provide your urologist with a list http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/anesthetics.html, http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/pain-meds.html and ask that you get medications that are compatible with breastfeeding.

If you are told to pump your milk and discard it, as for evidence for this practice - challenge your doctor - he/she is obviously unaware of current evidence.

I had a procedure done last Friday that required anesthesia. I specifically asked the anesthesiologist about breast feeding and he said it was fine. He used a gas (I didn't catch the name of) and propofol. I declined the versed they usually give before you even get to the OR and woke up about 10 minutes after the surgery feeling great. I went home about an hour and a half after surgery and nursed my 7 mo DS with no effects whatsoever. I think the key to feeling good was turning down the versed. The anesthesiologist said that they give it as a matter of course because it causes amenesia and most people don't want to remember the OR. Please don't listen if they tell you to pump and dump and ask the anesthesiologist to talk to the lactation consultant at the hospital (if they have one) about it if they won't listen to you. Good luck, Mama!

I went under a type of sedation that wasn't specifically classified as anesthesia but for all intents and purposes, I was O-U-T. I called the doctor's office to ask about it before the surgery and was told I would need to dump for 3 days. 3 days!!! It turns out that was their default answer. They didn't even look at the specific medication. I talked to the anesthesiologist the morning of the surgery, and he said 24 hours was plenty of time to wait. So, I would talk to the anesthesiologist.
