I'm clueless here -- is this movie appropriate for a 2 yr old and a 4 yr old? I have to be out of the house all day Sunday and was thinking of killing some time at the movie theatre ...

I don't remember anything inappropriate.

YouTube the song "Friends on the Other Side". If you think your kids can handle that, they can probably handle the rest of the film. I was a little surprised by how dark it was - there were spirit... demon... things that looked like grinning shadows who tried to catch the main characters. It wasn't really any darker than Maleficent or Ursula, I guess I just expected Disney to tame up the story a bit in These Modern Times. I'm glad they didn't though!

SPOILER:

Oh, and a semi-main character dies. It's bittersweet in the end, but might upset some kids. There is also a fairly brief moment with scary 'gators.

OK, I just youtube'd three of the songs from the movie and -- ugh -- I don't think I can take a whole movie like that, let alone the kids! I'm not a fan of Disney movies -- especially because the villians are too scary, but also I just find them too loud, agressive, and over-the-top in general -- but I had heard that this one was different. Guess not!

I really enjoyed the movie, especially on a second viewing, but yeah; it's pretty full-on. Oh well, you saved the price of three tickets!

aaaaaaah i was just coming over to post and say that what they can watch on dvd they would struggle with on the movie theater.

the movie theater magnifies everything and its a total experience.

so i feel for 'sensitive' 2 and 4 year olds it is not an appropriate movie.

however a movie like curious george would be a much better choice. esp. for a first movie experience.

because many times it isnt the sudden loud noises or the character that is scary. sometimes it can be the anger or sadness expressed.

Is it still in theaters? It's coming to DVD really soon, I think . . .

My 4 year old saw it and really liked it.

We saw this on New Years Eve. I cried, my mom made fun of me, and DD (4.5) argued with me that the character in question just closed his eyes for a really long time and wasn't, in fact, dead at all.
