Reactions to the name you chose?

Hi there,

just wondering what sort of reactions you are getting to the name you chose?

Ours have been very positive.

Margaret is very old-fashioned (around here), and most ppl seem pleasantly suprised to hear it on a wee babe.

anyone else care to share?

joy,
charlene

We get one of two answers- "Huh, how'd you come up with THAT?" or "That's beautiful! I've never met anyone with that name." We call her Maggie, but her full name is Magdalyn. I thought she looked like a Madelyn, but we already have an Addi so I thought having a Maddie would get too confusing LOL. A friend of mine suggested Magdalyn and it was perfect! It really suits her. Although, my Gram calls her Meggie b/c she wanted her to be named Meghan. Annoying. Every time she says it I say, "That's not her name."

well, if I met you in real life, you would get a "that's beautiful" from me!

I thought to name our baby Pandora long before Avatar came out. So now when people ask her name they go "oh is that because of the movie" and I say "nope" also I have gotten "oh did you get that from Kimya dawson" when I call her panda. "nope, it's a nick name for Pandora and no I have never heard the panda bear song"

We've gotten mixed reactions to Liam. Most people love it, but there are a few who go "what is his name?" liam "what?" very annoying.

then we've gotten what does it mean/where is it from? it is irish, hebrew, german & english & means protected guardian or helemeted protector.

People respond positively to Griffin/Finn. Now when they hear my daughter's name (Corbin) I get a lot of "Oh. That's unuuusual.". Like it's made up or something.

Ya know it's pretty divided down male/female lines. Our guy friends all love Max, but our female friends are very luke warm about it. That sort of how it was with us too though. My husband just loves the name and I am closer to the like department, but he just hated all my favorite names.

We have a Max too, but went with a more unusual full name (a Roman emperor). So we get a lot of "Where is that from?" But since our first son has an unusual, historical name, we think they go together well.

I picked Max out because of "Where the Wild Things Are," but years ago, before the movie.

Reactions to Aurora/Rory have been mostly either non-existent or quiet, so I'm pretty sure that people are a little freaked. Maybe I am spoiled but with dd1 everyone gushed about how pretty her name was. People still stop me to exclaim how much they like it. With dd2 the reactions are like..."Oh." and, "That's...unusual." or just silence. I have kind of defaulted to telling strangers her name is Aurora because people seem to freak more when I say Rory. Which surprises me really because I didn't think Rory was a shockingly unusual name. I know it is a boy's name but it's not like I named her Fred or something! Oh, well.

We've had lots of positive "oh, that's a great name" comments. Lots of no comments too. One of Skylar's middle names is a boy's name (family name) so a lot of people are confused when they hear her full name (as Skyler is also a boy's name...with the "e" rather than the "a" usually) and think she's a boy. Hope she doesn't hate that too much when she's older!

We get a lot of different reactions to Edelweiss. Some exclaim, "How beautiful!" Some people sing a few bars of the song. Some look at us blankly and say, "What?" Most everyone follows their initial utterance with, "What are you going to call her?" Grrrr....

We *love* her name. She is our beautiful blossom of snow. No regrets!

I guess Ezra is completely unheard of in Switzerland even though there is a German version (Esra). Everyone says, huh? The kids in DD's kindy class asked what it was in German. My fb friends say they like it though. Oh and his pedi thought he was a girl because his name ends in a.

People react really warmly to Holly's name, which kind of surprised me (I mean, I think it's very pretty, but it's not very popular or trendy). Reaction to the middle name is varied (Geraldine for my husband's grandmother) -- some people absolutely LOVE it, and some are like HUH? Overall people really like my daughters' names (Robin and Holly).

The most common reactino is, "really? how'd you think of that?" I think most people aren't impressed with it. The French people don't like it at all and the English speaking picture it as an old mans name (which is actually sort of fitting, since he really does have this old man face).

We love the book, but not the movie so we just hope people don't think we did it because of the movie. It's actually a family name.

DS's name is Corbin and we have only gotten positive feedback on it. I do have a lot of people ask how I came up with it though. No, I did not name him after Corbin Bleu from the Disney channel.

Most people say "Oh that's cool, how did you come with that" Aziz - Well it's one of Allah's names and it mean courage in Arabic, so I didn't exactly make it up. I will call him Z for short.

But the other day my grandfather came over and told me
"You know their going to call him Disease, right?"

I just laughed. That's great, Grandpa. Disease. Geesh. Now that I think about it maybe I should have gone with something else, but I still like the name.

Most people though just ask me how to spell it. Maybe I have a lisp or something but I thought it was pretty easy.

Sorry, what's your son's name?

Our little lady is Graciela and we get mixed reactions on it. People either adore it (quite often Latinos or Italians) or are a bit confused by it. A lot of people just have a really hard time pronouncing it, probably because my husband and I pronounce it with a bit of a rolled R. She goes by Ela though (or conejita, which was DH's nickname for her in the womb) and people have a much easier time with Ela.

I think Graciela (pronounced grah-see-eh-lah, right?) is a very pretty name. Ela is a cute nickname too (as well as dad's version, little rabbit).

We pretty much always hear that Marissa is a beautiful name, and the middle name Evelyn, we get positive from when they hear it is my grandma's name. My grandma's reaction was, "Wow! I never thought I would have someone named after me!", so I think she feels honored.
