DS2 was born Sept 7, so he is technically 6 months now, but he was a month early. And he was born with duodenal atresia and had surgery two days after birth to reconnect his intestines. Everything went great and he came home at 3 weeks. He is EBF at the moment. He started getting fussier at meal time about 2 weeks ago, trying to pull my plate off the table, grabbing for my spoon, etc. I have given him sips of water and he LOVES it. We've been giving him spoons, cups, etc in the highchair or while we hold him at the table and it works for a few minutes, but otherwise he is just done. He cries until either my husband or I leave the room with him.
He is almost sitting up himself, a bit tipsy yet. His pincher grasp is there, certainly very new and not well defined and he does not seem to have much of a gag with the sips of water or with his twice daily zantac.
So he was 4.5 week early. Babies born at 37 weeks though are considered term. So you could say that he was 1.5 weeks early. How firm is the 6 month "rule"?
I am terrified of starting solids because sometimes it can show a narrowing in the duodenum and surgery could be necessary again (very rare). Though whether we start now or a month from now isn't going to change that. And I don't want to miss his drive to start feeding himself by delaying too long. BTW there are no big familial allergies.
I just want to do what is right and sometimes I think I overthink these things. I wish all babies came with their own manual about when to start things, etc. =)
