There's a long story behind how we ended up with this turtle, but the summary is that it wasn't voluntary. She has been in DH's family for around 17yrs now and is still going strong. She's a red eared slider.
Obviously the daily cost of keeping her is very minimal but honestly I am sick of the tank. It smells all.the.time. DH tries his best to refresh the water as frequently as possible, since I throw up every time I have to smell it, but it's just really wearing on me. We have tried a variety of affordable filtering options but inevitably, the tank smells. Plus she HAS to be in our main living area, she's social and if she is even in the office where there's not as much traffic, she'll sulk and stop eating.
All the turtle rescues I have been able to find are full of red eared sliders and won't accept another.
I don't want to pass her on to someone who doesn't know anything about turtles, I don't know that much myself but at least I've been able to keep her healthy and happy for the past 7 years. DH's brother (who actually owned the turtle in the first place) got a new baby turtle for his daughter and it died a month later. Otherwise I would have happily given him back his own turtle.
Letting her loose is not an option by the way, despite everyone I talk to seeming to think it is.
So! Should I suck it up and carry on until she eventually passes of old age? Possibly another 10+ years? Or should I take the chance of posting an ad on craigslist/kijiji for a random person to take her? Or....? Any suggestions are welcome!
