Thrush advice needed!!

My ds2 is 5 weeks old and yesterday I realized we have thrush... My doc called an RX in for us that dh will p/u on his way home. What else can I do??? Overnight nursing has become a nightmare, I want to take sandpaper to my nipples... And to top it all off ds1 has a 102 degree fever.

What can I do diet-wise? Do I cut out my daily beer (for breastmilk of course), sugars, simple carbs???

So sorry you are dealing with thrush. What did your doc call-in for you? In my experience, the Nystatin treatment was completely useless. My LC told me that around 60% of thrush is now resistant to Nystatin, which is probably why it didn't work for us. Here's the protocol that finally got the yeast cleared-up for us:

1. Paint nips and LO's mouth with Gentian Violet. It is available over-the-counter, but you have to ask for it.
2. Daily good-quality probiotics (from the local health food store) for LO and me.
3. Rx diaper cream for LO's bottom to kill the yeast there.
4. Daily sanitizing of anything that came in contact with my breasts, BM, or LO's mouth (bras, pump parts, pacis, bottles, etc.). For bras, hand-wash in hot water, with detergent and white vinegar, then line-dry in direct sunlight.
5. Max dose of Grapefruit seed extract (also from the health food store)
6. Cut all refined flour and sugar out of my diet.
7. Use of All Purpose Nipple Ointment (APNO) by Dr. Jack Newman. It really helped with pain and encouraged healing.

Here is a link to Dr. Newman's Candida Protocol, including the recipe for APNO. DD and I eventually had to take a 10-day course of Diflucan, because we had thrush for almost 3-4 mo. I finally figured out that we were being re-infected by a paci storage container that they used at daycare (they washed it, but did not sanitize it).

I hope you get well soon!

My doc won't perscribe the Newman APNO! I asked... Instead I am getting a liquid nystatin that I have to somehow squirt into ds mouth.

Thank you for the oher info! Will start that today. I feel like just going topless since I am housebound anyway...

Your doc is being needlessly hard-headed IMHO. The worst thing about Nystatin (besides the fact that it doesn't work) is that it gave my DD a tummy ache. She got really fussy and spit-up a lot more when we were using it.

You can try making your own APNO with this recipe, if you want to:

Lotrimin or Monistat
Hydrocortisone cream (the OTC kind)
Triple antibiotic ointment or polysporin

Use equal parts of each ingredient. You should probably make sure it's wiped-off really well before nursing. And the hydrocortisone shouldn't be used for more than a couple of days.

Going top-less and leaving LO bottom-less are great ideas! It will allow plenty of light and fresh air to get to the yeast and kill it.

Another problem is that the Nystatin liquid contains sugar. Yeast feeds on sugar! Definitely cut out the beer (sorry) until the yeast is gone. Avoid dairy and most carbohydrates (fruit and veggies are fine).

Grapefruit Seed Extract is a great antimicrobial - add 10 drops to 1 ounce of distilled water, and apply once every hour with a cotton ball to the affected area (your breast especially, and baby's mouth if he will let you). If you don't see improvement in a day or so, increase the concentration. You can also use this solution on your baby's bottom.

I hope it goes away quickly for you. I battled it for what seemed like an eternity and ended up having to take diflucan for 4 weeks to get it to go away.
