Do you think there could be an issue here?

There is a little girl in my home daycare that turns 2 next month. There just seems to be something not quite right about her, but I can't put my finger on it. My own DD is three months younger but quite precocious when it comes to physical development so I try not to compare them. I don't want to bring it up with her parents unless/until I have something concrete to say. It is mainly a lot of little things, but maybe they add up to something more serious?

So do you think any of the following are concerning, either in whole or in part??

-- she was a late(ish) walker, not walking independently until 16 to 17 months. Now at 23 months she is still fairly unsteady and walks with her knees bent - kind of like she is skiing. She doesn't run, just walks fast. She doesn't jump yet either. I don't know about her earlier development milestones as she wasn't in my care then.

-- I have seen her use a pincer grasp, but she prefers to pick small things up with her other three fingers (middle, ring, pinky). Sometimes she uses her thumb, and other times she uses just the palm of her hand. She is double jointed in her thumbs (they bend all the way back) which may or may not be related.

-- her grasp is also unsteady - i.e. it often takes her a couple of tries to grasp onto something.

-- when I pick her up, she goes limp. I often pick up my DD by grasping her upper arms, but if I do that with this child I feel like I will rip her arms out of her sockets. If I carry her on my hip or she sits on my lap she is like a sack of potatoes.

-- she has been having poop retaining issues that her parents are currently treating with a prescription stool softener. This could be related to the other issues or not.

-- she is often distracted and it is hard to get her attention. I usually have to call her name several times before she responds. Her hearing seems to be fine as she always hears the trains that go by our house and wakes easily if there is a loud noise in the house. We don't watch very much tv, but when I do put it on she completely zones out.

-- she is very tactile with her feet. I am forever asking her to not stand on toys and books. She stands on things much more than she plays with them.

-- when she falls she starts to scream and freak out even though most of the time there are no injuries. And she falls a lot.

-- she doesn't interact with the other children very much. I don't expect her to be doing cooperative play or anything at this age, but she is very much in her own little world most of the time.

Her language seems to be within the realm of normal. She say a lot of the usual things (mommy, daddy, hi, bye, more, please, night night, etc.) and says a few two-word phrases (usually "bye bye mommy").

So I just don't know. Maybe a sensory issue? Maybe a fine or gross motor delay? Maybe nothing?

Thoughts? (And thanks for reading!)

my thumbs are double jointed

They bend all the way back. They say it is big joints. I have them in my shoulders too. My arms have a big range of motion. Unrelated to any abnormality unless my parents just never told me

I think something is going on. I would think her parents or pediatrician would have noticed??? I would bring it up gently with the family.
