Babies position

What is the latest anyone has had a twin change position? What is average? My attempt at a vaginal delivery all hinges on what position the babies are in and they are not cooperating, LOL. I am 30 weeks and for the past 4 weeks (that I know of for sure) Baby A has been either breech or transverse and Baby B has been transverse. My dr. will not let me deliver if Baby A is anything other than head down and Baby B can't be transverse. My peri said she usually tells moms that babies stop turning at 32 weeks but I was wondering what others have actually experienced. I'm not sure when my Ob will decide that he isn't going to wait any longer and want a c-section (gonna discuss that tomorrow) but I kinda feel that because they have been in those positions so long already that chances are they aren't going to turn now that space is getting cramped.

Don't give up hope! There are a couple twin moms on here who had babies turn while in labor.

My Baby B was head up until about 38 weeks and then she decided to turn vertex. (and let's hope she stays that way!)

I know it is stressful, mama.

I have a terrible memory - if it wasn't searingly important, chances are it's gone from my mind. Forgive me for a vague story.

So I know I kept track of my twinkie's movements - they were always together - both head up, head down, head up. And I know they moved a lot. I'm prreeeettttyyy sure they moved after 32 weeks. As I remember I was worried about the same thing - researching spinning babies and considering spending all day on hands and knees and putting cold packs on my belly, up until my 37 week u/s, which was my last. At that point both babes were head down and stayed there through deliver at 39 weeks. But for that story to make sense, both must have been heads up at 29 and or 33 weeks, my 2 previous u/s.

I was hoping for a homebirth, so position was really important to me too. Babies can definitely move, even in the later weeks. Talk those babes into it!

Good luck!

DS (who was Twin B) turned at 36 weeks 6 days. I remember this so clearly because he was born the day after I'd had an ultrasound, and sometime between the ultrasound and my c-section less than 24 hours later, he'd turned, and nobody knew until I was already open and on the table. I remember hearing the OB muttering under her birth to the assisting doctor about "he's moved, he's sideways, I'm gonna need you to help me turn him" or something roughly like that-- the exact words escape me at this point.

Unfortunately, he turned to a less-optimal position-- from frank breech to transverse. But it means they CAN and DO turn later. I don't know about Twin As-- I suspect they might be less likely to turn at a late date, just because it must be harder for them to find room to move. DD2 (who was Twin A) was head-down from about 30 weeks and never changed position much after that.

My twin A never moved once her head got down, at least that I am aware of. And at 2.5 years she still has slightly odd shaped head which I blame on being stuck so low.

Twin B was always moving around. I was induced at 41 weeks and they looked to see where she was before they started the induction and she was transverse. Later she was vertex. (I forget all the clarifying terms and truly didn't understand them at the time.) The induction failed and we looked again before I left the hospital, just out of curiousity and she was transverse. When I came back 24 hours later when my water broke she was vertex. 12 hours later when I was truly in labor they looked and she was transverse. When baby A was born she moved (with some external help) right into a comfy vertex position and was born easily 40 minutes later.

Anything can happen.

Mine liked to turn together, too. Something about not wanting to get kicked in the head, I'm sure.

They were born at 39 weeks and flipped around in there until the end. I went into labor with them complete breech and they'd been that way for at least a couple of days because we had felt them that way on Sunday and had an u/s on Monday and I went into labor Tuesday. But the week before my chiro had very clearly felt Claire's head in my pelvis when she adjusted it. We know for sure that Ben was head up at 35.5 when I had an u/s and I felt him flip breech at 37 weeks. That HURTS!

Well I talked to my Ob today and he said he'll give me until 34 weeks and if Baby A is still breech then he is going to schedule a c-section for 38 weeks. Beyond the fact that Baby A has been breech for awhile now both babies are measuring large (nearly 4 lbs @ 30 weeks) and Dr seems to think because they are bigger that they have less room and less chance of moving. So I guess they next 4 weeks are just waiting. I hate waiting, LOL. I'm a total type A personality and not know just kills me.

Keep in mind, too, that scheduling it doesn't mean you have to have it. I have a friend whose doc insisted on scheduling induction at 41 weeks, even though the baby was showing no sign of distress. My friend just didn't turn up. They called, she said, oh, sorry, can we reschedule, and continued doing that for three days, until labor started on its own.

If the babies DO turn after the time when the doc wants to schedule, you can always reconsider at that time, right? I would insist on an ultrasound to ascertain position, the day before the section is scheduled, and put off making a decision until then.

Consider lobbying for more time. Lots of OBs think 38 weeks is it for twins, but the studies are a bit flawed. If you're doing well otherwise, it can be worth it to go a full 40 weeks.

You could show this to your OB:

Thank you for asking this question! I am 28 weeks now and baby A has been breech for at least a month. I am doing everything I can to get him or her to turn but people are being less and less encouraging about my chances. It is great to hear that other people here have had twins turn later in their pregnancies. Good luck to you!!!

I promise that if my 6.6 and 7.6 babies can flip with ease at term, two four pounders have got a good shot.
