waterproof fabric?

I would like to make my kids some spash pants. Its too warm for skipants, but theres still snow on the ground so they're going to get all wet if they dont wear anything at all. All the "splash" pants I've seen in the stores are cheap nylon that soaks up water, it doesnt repel it at all.

So, my question, what type of fabric would you recommend?

TIA!

Is that a hard material to work with? Does it stiffen when it gets cold?

What about PUL? That's waterproof, isn't it?

I would use lightweight coated ripstop nylon. It's fairly inexpensive and it's what my son's rainpants from LL Bean are made of. We've never had a problem with soaking through and we live in a rainforest. His LL Bean pants are taped with seam tape to make them fully waterproof but you won't need that for just splashing.

I've heard of using PUL but my concerns are that the polyester knit face could get snagged easily, and it can be spendy. But if you have it on hand already then that might be a good option!
