Grunting in 3-4 mo?

Hey there mamas

So, my DD is almost 4 months now... and she's started this new thing where she is grunting a lot. She doesn't seem to have a lot of pain and her stools are normal. We are currently on an Elimination Diet because she had a lot of reflux before and we're doing better now.

Is this normal? She seems to grunt and strain a little bit more than what I'm comfortable with...

My DS grunts all the time, even when not pooping! I don't think you should be worried about it. Also, my DS was badly constipated this weekend and he strained A LOT. He did not grunt but he did cry. If your DD is in pain, you'll know.

I think it probably has more to do with learning how to use her voice than with constipation. My DD is 4 months and grunts loudly a lot!

My baby did a lot of weird noises including vocalizing on an inhale which I thought was wheezing. When we brought her in for that the Ped heard her and said she is learning/trying out vocalizing. No problems, just her trying out her voice. If stools are still the same and no other symptoms, I would guess DD is learning how to make new noises.

My DS who's 5.5months now, started grunting at about 1month of age. He use to grunt so hard that he looked like he was straining to push something out. And he did it allllllll the time. Being EBF it was confusing because his BM's were normal and runny. We think he stopped doing it at around 3-4months but can't be sure because we became so use to it and didn't notice that it stopped.

Thanks mamas

I'm glad that this seems like a normal thing. I think you all are right- she is probably learning to test out her voice because she is otherwise pretty happy.

cheryllynn- my baby did that too (the weird noise in the inhale thing)! That went away though before I got a chance to ask the doc about it.
