hacking cough in 10mo. help pleaseeee!

my ds has a terrible cough for the last 3-4 days that's not letting up! he's been fitfully sleeping at night, very cranky n clingy in the day. the cough brings up all kinds of mucus from the throat but he's not able to cough it out..swallows it back etc. i've tried steaming, trying to "fish" it out of his mouth, vicks on chest but it isn't helping. what can i do????

My 10 month old is also coughing. I was reading on natural remedies. Besides the steam of the shower, here's a recipe that might work:

Cut up part of an onion and place in oven for 20 minutes or until translucent. Add 1 clove of garlic chopped and 1 TSP olive oil. Mix together and make compress over back and chest. Cheesecloth might be helpful to keep in place. This is supposed to help break up mucous and clear out the cough.
