About once a week I get engorged on my left side. I had thought that engorgement was just so much milk that you got super full and baby couldn't drink it all. What's happening to me is baby can drink for about 5 minutes and then it just stops. He sucks and sucks and nothing comes. Then he happily drinks the other side empty. I'm painfully full and he wants the milk, but he can't get it out. Hand expression doesn't work, pumping doesn't work, heat doesn't work. The first time this happened my midwife said "just let him get good and hungry and he'll get it out." That did work that time. But I've started him on that side every time since yesterday afternoon and he's not making any headway (this includes his nightly feedings which had 3.5 hours of sleep in between each - longer than he usually sleeps). I'm just getting fuller. I know it will eventually kind of clear itself out, but he's been gaining super slow and he NEEDS this milk. He actually has a weigh-in with the ped today and I'm freaking out because I want to give him every last drop so she doesn't start talking formula.
Generally he's happy. He has been crying more when I try to put him to the full side I assume because he knows he's not gonna get anything. He's been sleeping a bit more than usual, but he's not acting fussy while awake.
Please help me figure out what to do!
