I don't mind the fur so much. It's just fur. If it's cute and soft when it's attached to the cat, why is it gross on the sofa? It's the grime that gets to me - the black stuff on my sock bottoms. One of the places I worked had a big problem with that because the cleaner used SOOOO much soap on the carpets (in the carpet cleaner machine). Like diapers that needed to be stripped, the floors were holding dirt and grime.
Anyway, I have hardwoods that were under carpet for 20 years. They need refinishing, but it's such an expense and hassle I haven't gotten around to it. There was a LOT of soil on them. And skugginess. And sock-blackener. My solution has to been to take a wet rag on a swiffer to them whenever I've got a spare moment. Just water. Frequently. They're almost totally clean, 3 years later. I don't worry about under the furniture or the corners, just the parts we touch. The idea is to make it so easy I JUST DO IT. Ha.
About once a month, I mop with a hardwood floor cleaner after vaccuuming with a real vacuum. And I have a roomba for fur pickup daily-ish.
I don't care about shoes in the house. Sometimes I wear mine, sometimes I don't. Depends on if my feet hurt a lot that day. Hurt feet = shoes on. But I've got weird feet.
