Devices for Hearing Impaired Child

I am looking for a product to use for my son who has unilateral sensorenal hearing loss. He currently has a tube in his hearing ear but presumably it is blocked (again) b/c he has failed another hearing test.

I haven't checked with my insurance to see what if anything they will cover but I am looking for something small and portable that he can use at home, in the car and possibly at school.

Any recommendations?

He just turned 5

Thanks

What sort of device are you looking for? Something for him to communicate with, or for you to communicate with him, or a hearing aid?

He isn't a candidate for a hearing aid only a BAHA which we have looked into.

I was thinking more along the lines of some type of FM system that he could use?? Something to improve his hearing outside of the normal aid.

Those are two personal FM systems that I recently was told about, and am looking into for Connor.

YOu said you're looking into the BAHA...could he wear it with a softband for now? We looked into that for Connor, too, but his loss is only at specific frequencies, and a BAHA can't be frequency modulated for his loss, so it wasn't a good option. But it might be for you guys.

Thank you I just googled them both, I hadn't seen either of those in my previous searches. We ruled out the BAHA for many reasons...it is hard to get for us, we have to consult 3+hrs away for it, and go back multiple times and try and get a loaner ect.. We were told that insurance would want it implanted after the age of 6 or 7 or whatever age they would want to implant it... Otherwise they wouldn't cover it.

We have no intentions of implanting it ever.. too many risks.

It is something we would look at again in the future as far as wearing it on a band but for now we're not.

We have had tremendous trouble keeping his hearing UP in his only hearing ear. We have an appt again on the 19th with the ENT and I am thinking if his tube is blocked again that I am going to ask her to remove them and try without one for a while. We have been unsuccessful at that in the past but he has already had 3 surgeries and I don't want to keep putting him under and risking damaging his only hearing every time they do!

Anyways his Special Ed Teacher and I have been discussing him going into K this Fall and the option of using an FM system ect. I was thinking that it could be something that could benefit him all around and thinking of purchasing one I just don't know where to begin there is SO much on the net!

We haven't done any research on FM systems yet but will rather soon. But will the school system not provide it instead of you having to buy it? Besides equipment, there are things you can have done to his actual classroom to lower the noise level so he can hear better--tennis balls on the bottom of the chairs(if not attached to the desks)-eliminates the noise of them scraping on the floor, putting rugs on the floor to help with acoustical conditions.

I hope you are able to find something to help him!
