Neurologist question

A little background: My DD, 6, was a 23 week preemie and now is visually impaired, has SPD and mild hypotonia. She has problem with oral motor planning and her fine motor skills are delayed about 2.5 years. The hypotonia, oral motor planning and fine motor delay have only recently been diagnosed. Her old therapist told me those problems were because she was blind and had no other cause. New (more experienced) therapist identified them as problems not secondary to her vision loss. DD had a possible seizure (no history of) in January and we followed up with a neurologist. It was the first time we had seen one. He asked the purpose of our visit and I explained her possible seizure episode. But did not go into detail about her SPD, fine motor delay or oral motor planning difficulty. He diagnosed the hypotonia during the exam so I didn't have to cover that. After the consultation, he recommended a EEG and a MRI. The EEG came back normal and the MRI is scheduled for next Tuesday.

I have very little experience with what all a neurologist can diagnosis or test for and I'm wondering if the EEG or MRI would be able to show the possible causes of her delays and hypotonia. And if that cause can give us greater insight into how to treat them. Should I contact the neurologist and go into more detail about her delays?

Thanks!

yes. You might just do a brief written summery. I like to do bulleted lists.

It's really best that any professional involved with her care know all the pieces of the puzzle, and this is a big piece and a doctor with LOTS of training.

Well all I can tell you out of that is our Ped Neuro ordered an MRI after diagnosing my ds with Hypotonia... I know he was looking for CP for sure and maybe for other abnormalities. He also ordered testing for Fragile X and other chromosome disorders.

The MRI didn't show anything significant so he just diagnosed Benign Congenital Hypotonia.

Personally I would tell them of all of her medical history, there might be something there that is helpful for them.

Abosolutely. I do a short list or a timeline. I always tell everyone everything, because sometimes they have AHA!!! moments where they just needed one more piece of info to figure out what the puzzle looks like.
