Doing "down" his own way

Just a question of "form," I guess. I have a rescue border collie/ducktoller/retriever mix who is about 6 years old. I've had him since last summer and he is SO smart. We are doing really well with "down," but somehow he has learned to do it with his right front leg tucked under him. I must have gotten excited when he first started to down and praised him for this, because now that's the only way he does it! He kind of sinks to the ground. It's very cute.

But is it a real "down?" I would love to do agility with him, just for fun; but will it be acceptable in any kind of formal situation? If not, how do I train it out of him? Personally, I really don't care; I don't see how it can be a problem. Just wondering. I'm a total amateur.

It might slow him down ever so slightly coming off of a table in agility but other than that it shouldn't be a problem. It may be that it is structurally more comfortable for him to do that.

Thanks, subtle. I doubt we'll ever get to a level in agility where that will make or break us, though you never know! Plus, I have never in my LIFE seen a dog this fast; so being slowed down likely wouldn't be an issue.

Agility is tons of fun whether for competition or just for the heck of it. You might also check out flyball = )

That's better than my dog. She will "down" great, but she flops straight over into a "rub my belly" position. lol There is no normal "down" for her yet. LOL

Agility is lots of fun, I agree. I can't see that being an issue at all! Plus, if its just for fun, then don't worry about it even if someone says it is. If you are taking classes, no one should care and if you compete and lose a point or whatever, ignore it, and have fun! But I really think it wouldn't be an issue at all.

Thanks, everyone. He actually did a perfect down yesterday and I was a bit disappointed! I remembered to praise him like mad, though. He gained points for form, but lost a few for artistic impression.
