Terry Cloth mattress covers?

I was wondering if any of you had experience with terry cloth mattress covers. They claim to be waterproof and look a bit like a thin towel wrapped around the mattress. They are much cheaper here than the quilted mattress pads. Would one be warmer than the other? Anything else you know about them?

Oh, I had another thought, would one be easier to clean than the other? We line dry and have a small-ish washer.

I'm German and we have a different "system" of beds and sheets. Have you had a closer look in a store (like "Bed, Bath and Beyond" or similar)?
